Editorial Reviews

2009 two CD collection of tracks from this Grateful Dead spin-off group. The NRPS recorded a number of albums for CBS/Columbia, but their material released by the Relix label has been unavailable for many years. This double disc set presents the best of those Relix recordings plus six tracks by the original line up (John Dawson, David Nelson, Jerry Garcia, Mickey Hart and Phil Lesh) recorded before the band signed to Columbia. Also featured are tracks from the album Live on Stage recorded at the Beacon Theatre and the Keystone in 1975 which feature Spencer Dryden (Jefferson Airplane), Skip Battin (Byrds/Flying Burrito Brothers) and Buddy Cage. Retroworld.

OK, so its not a slick studio sound, but I kinda like it. First, some of it sounds like a very informal small setting almost like being in a small bar lounge setting. And in some instances the fiddle, or Jerry Garcia's pedal steel on "Last Lonely Eagle" seem to stand alone. Second, On other songs the vocals are very much in the forefront; giving an almost "New Riders Unplugged" sound. Third, very nice collection of songs including "Friend of the Devil" and "Ripple". When you compare to the "Live in Japan" which is quite pricey it's a much better value.(only 9 songs) And the personnel on that CD only has one original member of the early NRPS lineups.(John Dawson).
Relix Best Of NRPS kinda makes me long to be in San Francisco sittin' in Trader Vic's sippin' an Anchor Steam beer, while the boys whip it up in the early glory days.

I've said in my other reviews of this band, I'm not a NRPS Head. I just really like them and have pretty much most of what they have released. I'm the type of person who likes to collect other versions/recordings of songs by artists which caused me to pick this one up. The other reason is because the import is two albums in one. It's Relix's Best of and it's also "Before Time Began". This is not a polished recording of the band but if you are really into the band and want to collect their stuff you will want this in your collection as I have. If you want great recording you might want some of their studio recordings. It's a part of the bands history and I'm glad I got it. Sometimes you just have to spend a few bucks and see if you like it. That's my advice...I spent the money, and I liked it.

This is a live CD which sounds like it was recorded by someone in the third row on a cassette recorder. I'm so pissed I got suckered into buying this POS.

This collection of live songs leaves much to be desired. Buy this New Riders of the Purple Sage only if you are a completist. Much like the Grateful Dead, there are some great live CDs on the market. Sadly, this one suffers from below average sound quality.
