This book is simply adorable. I am buying it for a friend who's daughter loves animals and is bilingual- A plus in both ends. The story has me, a cat lover, laughing out loud. However, it is the illustrations that make this book so special. Each page has details to look at over and over again. The bright colors and bold design will attract all readers, young and old. And as apparent who has had to read the same favorite book over and over, each page is a delight to look at, every time.

"A Very Smart Cat/ Una Gata Muy Inteligente" is a whimsical bilingual tale of a most unusual cat and her adopted family. She is always on the table, and if she finds anything of interest to her there, she makes full and competent use of it! She eats food, drinks coffee, cuts out magazine articles, makes long distance phone calls (to multiple, foreign, exotic cats!), takes pictures with the camera, draws with the pen, changes channels with the remote, and orders Japanese takeout with the wallet! She plays the harmonica all night long, wears the hat and mittens, sleeps in the fruit bowl, and uses the house keys to lock her owner out! The owner begs the reader (or anyone) to please take my cat, but finally announces at the end that "She finally went outside!" Unfortunately she has the truck keys and plans to tour with friend cats through Catskill, NY. The owner posts a newspaper add for his missing cat, describing her as Very, Very Smart and if found, to please keep her and return the truck! "A Very Smart Cat" aims to amuse and entertain, but also to teach (that all cats are created equal) of human friendship with cats in particular. The charming, colorful illustrations show cozy scenes of a black and white cat in a northeastern farmhouse setting. "A Very Smart Cat" will sweep up the opposition with no visible trouble whatsoever. Thranslations by Jacueline Herranz Brooks make "Una Gata Muy Inteligente" a double asset.

I purchased this book at the Cat Gala in Catskill NY for my 3 year old grand daughter Kayla. If you are a cat lover this book is for you whatever your age. I laughed all the way through it. It is written in Spanish and English =)

My eight year son picked this book out because he loved the cover. He loves cats! Luckily judging a book by its cover was a good idea in this case. The book is delightful from beginning to end. He especially enjoyed the part where the cat orders sushi takeout. It really makes you think what your pets really do when you are at work. A must for cat lovers young and old!

Upon reading the title I had no desire to order the book. I, myself, am a dog person, and have very little interest in any material related to cats. Three of my particular favorite children's books which involve animals are Clifford the Big Red Dog, Go Dog Go, and The Phantom Toll Booth. (Along with my recommendation for this book, please make sure to check the aforementioned books out as well.) Thankfully my wife went ahead purchasing the book anyway.

Both my kids -I have a daughter who is seven and a son who is five- love the book. Mario Picayo's writing is both clever and insightful, of course, never failing to keep in mind his intended audience (children 4-8), yet still finding a way to humor adults who are more than likely to read the book to children. The art by Yolanda Fundora is fun and quirky; nothing dark or frightening which is more often the case in many of the new children's books such as the collaborations between Neil Gaiman and Dave Mckean.

Another wonderful aspect about A Very Smart Cat is the book being bilingual. The book is both in Spanish and English. I find this to be a great learning tool for any child. For English speaking kids, it helps open a window to another culture. Not to digress too much, but corporate book stores need to carry books with such advantages. The book helps broaden a child's mind (especially if they are like my children and only one language is spoken inside the househould)and distinguish it from the rest of the pack.

Overall, the book was an unexpected joy. But, be forewarned my fellow dog lovers- after finishing the book my daughter decided that the family must own a cat. The book was well worth the purchase and is a great gift for any child or the reader who loves books for children.
