5.0 out of 5 stars This album still shines, even to this day.
I remember first listening to this album in 1981 when I was in 7th grade, the voice of this lady just blew me away. Coming from the talented Laws Family (Ronnie, Herbert & Eloise) listening to them they just blew you away. The song "Very Special" along with her Brother Ronnie still sounds good & Fresh just as I first heard it back in 1981. Debra was already on the scene...

1.0 out of 5 stars Only has a few good songs
The CD is ok. You may be better off just grabbing the hit song off I-Tunes. This is not a CD you will listen to more than once or twice.

Coming from the talented Laws Family (Ronnie, Herbert & Eloise) listening to them they just blew you away. The song "Very Special" along with her Brother Ronnie still sounds good & Fresh just as I first heard it back in 1981. Debra was already on the scene because in 1980 she sang the vocals on the song "Family" with her Brother Herbert. You may know that Jennifer Lopez Sampled this song for her hit "All I Have" along with LL Cool J but there's nothing like the original. This CD is A MUST HAVE FOR YOUR COLLECTION.

5.0 out of 5 stars Debra Laws, where did you go?, July 14, 2005
This review is from: Very Special (Audio CD)
One of the best overall recordings to come out in the last 20 years. This LP was originally released back in the spring of 1981, and the first single was, Be Yourself, followed by the slow jam classic, Very Special. Other excellent tunes are, On My Own, Meant For You, and All The Things I Love. If you are a R&B fan like I am, then you need to get this limited release.

Finally,Debra's Back Home!
After pulling quite a few strings,i got my hands on this Japan only issued CD "Very Special" by Debra Laws.It is worthy of the search. The cuts "All The Things I Love","How Long",and obviously the title track will always pull weight in my favorites poll.I remember getting this LP in '81 from the now defunct RCA Record Club, got smart and purchased a backup cassette from them a couple of months later to give my vinyl a rest.It brings back some serious 80's memories that i make my buisness not to forget

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, underrated album, May 21, 2004

This review is from: Very Special (Audio CD)
I found a vinyl copy of this album and was finally able to hear it. It is quite good! The title track "Very Special" a duet between Laws and brother Ronnie is the tops! The other tracks are all nice, though few might be called unexceptional. Generally, the album is a nice listen.

I'm happy that the 17 year old reviewer was able to check out Debra Laws after hearing the track sampled by J Lo. It is too bad we have to hear so much great music in samples by artists (and I mean no offense to any fans) that are in my humble opinion less than talented. Nuff said. Good album!

5.0 out of 5 stars Still Hot ever TOday, November 23, 2002

OK....I'm 17 years old, and I had never heard of Debra Laws or "Very Special" until recently when I heard the new Jennifer Lopez album. On "All I Have" featuring LL Cool J, she samples bits from "Very Special" and it truly is a great song. After hearing it, I had to find out who sang the original hook, and I searched on Kazaa and found Debra Laws. This is truly a great song and I would imagine the rest of the album is equally great.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet & Special Is What It Is!, April 27, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Very Special (Audio CD)
I really enjoyed the VERY SPECIAL cd by Debra Laws. Even though I never heard the entire album back in the 80s, the title song "Very Special" stuck in my memory banks where it stayed dormant until it was reawakened in the 90s by the hip-hop remake of "Very Special" by Big Daddy Kane and Spinderella (The Very Best of Big Daddy Kane).

Well, that made me seek out the original, which I found on Napster, and that was that until just recently. I decided to do a search on Debra Laws on Amazon and I found the VERY SPECIAL CD. And I'm glad I bought it.

All of the songs on this cd are GREAT! Mixing jazz with dance beats to great effect, you just can't help moving with the music. And Ms. Laws' vocals are just right! Her voice rings clear like a bell, as she goes up and down the scale with ease.

My favorites beside the title track are "On My Own," "Meant For You," and "How Long." Why Debra Laws isn't a household name I'll never understand...Because on this cd from 1981 she more than proves her vocal talent.

This is a great album from a great musical family. Truly a treat. Also, F. Howelll was inquiring about a song called "Your Incredible" that song is done by Eloise Laws, Debra's sister. They have a remake of the album on the market but no where as good as the first album "Eloise".

Enjoy Debra!

5.0 out of 5 stars Rare Laws CD is Cause for Celebration...., January 30, 2002
This review is from: Very Special (Audio CD)
...this was 'it' in the mid to late 80s. In some corners in the world, "Very Special" is still being played. I loved "Be Yourself", also. If you never heard her, you are in for a treat. If you have heard her and haven't heard her tunes for a while, get ready to be sent back to that "uh-huh!" spot....don't forget, her sister, Debra Laws, put out some good tunes in the 80s, too.
