5.0 out of 5 stars Listening to Nat IS "Paradise", October 4, 2000

This review is from: Very Thought of You (Audio CD)
I am so glad that I finally gave in and bought this. This CD is so beautiful, relaxing and sexy. Every one of these songs are guaranteed to make you want to cuddle up with that someone special. The songs I particularly liked were, of course, "The Very Thought of You", "But Beautiful", the gorgeous "Impossible" (which was written by comedian Steve Allen!), "I Found A Million Dollar Baby", "I Wish I Knew The Way To Your Heart", "There Is No Greater Love", "The More I See You", "My Heart Tells Me", "This Is All I Ask" and the steamy "Paradise". On the latter tune, Nat makes you as sort of a witness to a seduction! Each action is described in Nat's dreamy baritone. Then you hear Nat humming, like he's in reverie, thinking about it...then he sings, "Then she takes me...to Paradise." Better than any of the so-called music "to get your groove on to" out today and probably Nat's sexiest recording EVER. Your CD player just might melt listening to that one. And it was one I had on repeat at least five times! :o)

You'll never want this CD to end. The lush arrangements by Gordon Jenkins always seem to bring out the best in Nat's rich and resonant voice, as it was evident on LOVE IS THE THING (1957)and later in WHERE DID EVERYONE GO? (1963). The title of the second song can sum up just what this Nat King Cole CD is: "But Beautiful". A MUST for any CD collection. Get it.

5.0 out of 5 stars "unassuming warmth & graciousness ~ Nat King Cole", March 13, 2005
This review is from: Very Thought of You (Audio CD)
Capitol Records presents "The Very Thought of You", featuring the voice from heaven ~ sample one of the finest collections ever recorded by an artist who was always on top of the charts. No other singer in the business had the warmth that this man gave during a performance. Along with Frank Sinatra, Cole built the Capitol Towers and brought them fame and fortune. Cole in my estimation did more for Capitol Records than any other recording artist of that time (and that my friend is saying something), but it is the true gospel.

Entire collection is a stand out in my book...America never had a more widely beloved ambassador (except for Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong), hope this is a glimpse into the future of better things coming our way if the recording industry ever wakes up to the listeners and fans of good music.

Nat had a tenderness in his voice, completely flawless...he could never deliver a bad tune...his style and signature of making a song his own has never been duplicated. Within this compilation are 16 heartfelt ballads...Some are timeless that remain classics, while others are songs that have never seen the light of day...a collectors dream come true...more selections from the greatest entertainer of our time!

In alphabetical order are the 16 selections:

BUT BEAUTIFUL (Van Heusen/Burke)
CHERCHEZ LA FEMME (Bob Marcus/Lorenzo Pack)
CHERIE, I LOVE YOU (Lillian/Rosedale/Goodman)
DON'T BLAME ME (Dorothy Fields/Jimmy McHugh)
FOR ALL WE KNOW (J. Fred Coots/Sam M. Lewis)
I FOUND A MILLION DOLLAR BABY (IN A FIVE AND TEN CENT STORE)" (Warren/Rose/Dixon)
I WISH I KNEW THE WAY TO YOUR HEART (Notorious) (Stillman/Rossi)
MAKING BELIEVE YOU'RE HERE (James Van Heusen/Sammy Cahn)
MAGNIFICENT OBSESSION (Karger/Laine)
THE MORE I SEE YOU (Harry Warren/Mack Gordon)
MY HEART TELLS ME (SHOULD I BELIEVE MY HEART) (Gordon/Warren)
NO GREATER LOVE (Isham Jones/Marly Symes)
IMPOSSIBLE (Steve Allen)
PARADISE (Nacio Herb Brown/Gordon Clifford)
THE VERY THOUGH OF YOU (Ray Noble)
THIS IS ALL I ASK (Gordon Jenkins)

Brilliant counter melodies interwoven with lingering arrangements by Gordon Jenkins, recorded in May 1958 that instantly became classics...beautiful and heartfelt ballads with classic orchestrations...featuring Nat's original style are simply captivating...with tender lyrics that bring two lovers together...Nat sings this from the heart and you're loving it...throughout the evening sample this with your favorite partner...as Nat completely takes charge savoring wonderful memories of the good times...now we can relive the songs that gave us so much pleasure...remember Nat was with us for such a short time...just sit back, give a listen and enjoy the sounds we grew up with...songs we've come to love over these past plus sixty years...gotta love it!

Total Time: 56:36 on 16 Tracks ~ Capitol 48331 ~ (7/02/1991)

5.0 out of 5 stars But Beautiful, April 12, 2000

This is undoubtedly one of Nat's best albums. Backed with gorgeous strings and the wonderful arrangements of Gordon Jenkins, every song is a triumph. Makes you long for this kind of music today, unlike the school of no talent needed singers out there lately. A great album to listen to after a busy day, makes you just want to kick off your shoes & sit back in your favorite easy chair, letting Nat's golden voice wash right over you. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my top 5 favorites., August 2, 2002

Honestly. One of my favorites. Nat King Cole's voice is recorded so well that it seems his spirit has entered the room when it come on. The orchestra is beautiful (am I the only one that hears a distinct similarity between the intro to the title track and the intro to Fripp and Eno "Wind on Water" from Eveing Star?), and every song takes you farther away from the tensions of every day life. This is an album from the late fifties, but it seems like its from the future. I can't explain the way this CD draws me into it, all I know is that its up there with Tomita "The Planets", Tangerine Dream "Rubicon", King Crimson "Larks Tounges in Aspic", and Ravi Shankar "Ragas and Talas" as personal favorites.

5.0 out of 5 stars smooth as satin, February 22, 2000

There is a reason why this recording is in the "essential" list: it is as smooth as satin. It's amazing that Cole never intended to be a singer, his vocals had a refined, raspy quality that leave most singers envious. All in all, the music is extremely soothing and romantic; but don't take my word for it - just look at Nat's face on the cover of the album!

Wonderfully lush and romantic, Nat King Cole's "The Very Thought of You" is a classic. Gordon Jenkins' arrangements are stellar and definitive. It is more than a shame that this CD is no longer available.

I am the consummate torch fanatic. This CD is without a doubt Nat's best. Every song is a treasure. Although these were recorded and released the year before I was born, their elegance and sophistication are eternal. Gordon Jenkins' accompaniment is breathtakingly beautiful. It's a perfect mood setter for solitary listening or romantic interlude. It is well worth the time and effort to secure a copy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Smoothest voice ever, January 1, 2001

Although I have seen this album when I was a teenager in the fifties, I have never possessed it. The singing of "The very thought of you" is simply magical. Only Nat could have sung it with such feeling. The cover of the album proves it. Every song he has sung is a gem, too numerous to mention. Every time I hear Nat, I swoon over his singing style. He is, not was (he is still living among us) the greatest singer the world has known. He should be made the singer of the century.
