This is my favorite recording of the 1610 Vespers. It is gorgeous. Emma Kirkby is in it-enough said. I have a different recording of this (John Gardiner) which sounds leaden compared to this beautiful version. This recording is now available as a "Virgin Veritas x2" (Virgin Classics) CD.

A great recording,

The contrasts created between the choir and the solo group are beautiful -- especially in the Dixit Dominus where the gushing pulsating double choir is followed by the light solo group. Nigel Roger's singing is very memorable but partially because of his wonderful reedy sound. This recording sound very atmospheric with the chants and the Cima sonatas (played with religious conviction) interspersed. Some newer recordings may be better (this was recorded in 1984 I think) -- I don't know -- but this recording must certainly be in the top 3.
