This is an interesting and worthwhile project. Pierre Cao has unearthed a lot of previously unrecorded works from the Viennese Court in the early 18th Century and between them he and Christine Pluhar have employed considerable scholarship to recreate a Vespers service as it may have been celebrated at the Court of Charles VI. Like everything Christine Pluhar does, it has depth and considerable originality but the music is a little dull, to be honest, and as a result it's not one of her most enjoyable discs.

The composers represented here are Reinhardt, Geitle, Sances, Zächer and a fifth whose name, amusingly, won't pass the language filter. (If you don't think it will corrupt you irretrievably, you can find it by clicking on the image of the back cover to read the text.) They're not exactly great names and it seems to me that there is a reason why these pieces have never been recorded before: they aren't all that musically interesting. They are perfectly competent settings of texts but there's an awful lot of recitative-like stuff and for me it never really takes off. I spent a lot of the disc waiting for something really interesting to happen.

I'm sorry to have to say all this, because the performances are excellent, as one would expect from L'Arpeggiata. They give it everything and the choral and solo singing is also very good, but in the end fine performances can't quite make up for mediocre music.

Quite often, discs of unearthed and unknown music turn out to be real treasure. Sadly, I don't think that's the case here. It is good to have a historical record like this available but in spite of fine performances I don't find it all that enjoyable. I can only give this a rather lukewarm recommendation.
