Stirring and Hilarious Biography.,
If ever one needs proof of the saying "Fact is stranger than fiction." This is the proof! This biography combines the often sarcastic writing of Pulitzer Prize winning Robert Lewis Taylor and the simply incredible life of Carry Nation. A hatchet wielding leader of men and women to smash up saloons in Kansas prior to the national Prohibition amendment. Her Mother thought she was Queen Victoria, her daughter ended up in the insane asylum, and her cousin did too. But despite some various episodes even her political enemies agreed, Carry Nation was not insane. Just very committed to her cause. Just to give a hint of what her life was like here is a quote from the book, during a raid "Mrs. Nation smashed one saloon's Venetian mirror with brickbats, flung stones through a second saloon's windows, leveled a half-brick at the head of a boy attempting to sweep up (missing by inches), ripped some candid and stimulating prints from the walls, powdered the bric-a-brac and glasses, separated the rungs from all chairs, drop-kicked a cuspidor over a pot-bellied stove and threw a billiard ball at what she mistakenly took to be 'Satan' lounging behind the bar." Her most successful raids appear to have been in Kansas, where apparently the Wild West attitude took to admiring her spunk. And she developed quite a following, even among saloon owners. Becoming an international sensation, Carry Nation was jailed too many times to count and her hatchet became a symbol of the temperance movement. I have to say, this is one of my favorite books ever. And Carry Nation is probably one of the most interesting people I have ever read about in my entire life. This is a must read!

This nonfiction book is delightful. Full of true life colorful characters, describing an important time in history, with an engaging and often humorous style, this is a story worth reading. At times I laughed out loud. The theme is prohibition and the ladies who considered it their God given duty to fight demon rum.
