Editorial Reviews

Vessel is a complex collection of songs that shows why twenty one pilots as added to Fueled By Ramen's extremely selective roster. The band entered a real studio for the first time ever with Grammy nominated producer Greg Wells (Weezer, Adele) to craft an album which merges elements of hip-hop, indie rock and punk in a way that's so seamless, you'll be rapping along one minute and caught up in a lush orchestral line the next.

Biography

In its purest form music acts as a conduit of self-expression that's free from the conventions of society and that spirit of fearlessness lies at the core of twenty | one | pilots, a group whose musical vision is completely their own. Over the past few years the duo of frontman Tyler Joseph and drummer Josh Dun have built a hardcore following that seems primed to reach a fever pitch with ... Itunes recommended this CD to me. I would usually be like, eh Itunes doesnt really know what i like, and brush it off, but then i hear the first single "Holding On To You" and was confused. Is this the same thing Itunes suggested? No way. It's too good. It's originality and creative aggresive/peaceful sound dumbfounded me and i simply was at a loss for words. THEN i found out how old these two were. They are either seniors in high school, or fresh out of that hell, and this amazed the hell out of me. i am older than these magicians, and i could never achieve anything of this magnitude. so after all of my surprise, i went onto spotify and the whole CD has been on repeat since Wed. and that leaves me feeling so content. Now here is a track by track review. i'll keep it short, and it is my opinion so dont hate:

1. Ode To Sleep: Amazing song to open the album with. the synth work that leads into this very unique, almost futuristic percussion, is outstanding, and then in comes the rap. and the maturity of the lyrical content is insane. i have no critique for this song at all (lets be real now by the way, ill have no critiques for any song. each one is great in their own way. 10/10

2. Holding On To You: perfect single. poppy, but holds onto their sound very well. i hope to hear this on all the radio stations (since it is an example of almost all genres.) 9/10

3. Migraine: My favorite song on the album. the flow of the rap, the lyrical content, the hook of the chorus... it is perfection. absolutly amazing. 11/10 ;)

4. House of Gold: the lyrics of this song seem a lot more personal than the others, and it is a bit slowed down with a really cool acoustic strumming throughout, with some rad piano work about a quater of the way through. 8/10

5.

Trust me, this band and album is amazing, it is a make of some of their older popular songs re-recorded with the label, and a mix of new songs! This band is very outside the box, and sometimes it takes a couple listens to get use to them. But once you start to pick up the songs, you fall in love and gotta have more! Tyler and Josh are great men who spend a lot of their free time volunteering their music abilities to church events in their home town. If you have never seen them live, you need to go to a show ASAP. But first, get this album and memorize their songs so you can sing along!

This Columbus, Ohio, outfit blows me away every time I listen to the record. The radio hit, "Holding Onto You," had me hooked and I decided that was enough to give the entire album a chance. But I was not prepared for what I heard.

A fantastic mix of hip-hop, soul, folk and pop makes Vessel an infectious album and early frontrunner for album of the year. The best songs are eclectic: the electronic "Screen," ukulele masterpiece "House of Gold," and the aforementioned radio earworm "Holding Onto You." Many of these songs appeared on their self-released 2011 record, Regional At Best, but Greg Wells' production has brought out the best in the band on Vessel`s re-recordings.

Another song that is hard to forget is the angst-ridden "Car Radio," written about a stolen stereo.

I have these thoughts so often I ought to replace that slot with what I once bought 'cause somebody stole my car radio and now I just sit in silence.

So simple, and yet so profound. This band is blessed not only with musical ability, but with the ability to take plain concepts and turn them into thought-provoking songs.

I cannot stop listening to this CD. It's irresistible!... once you get over the initial weirdness of a few rapid shifts within some songs. The first time I listened, I was like, wha...??? when that happened. Like, can they do that? And what would that even look like, in notes and time signatures and all? And, is that like wearing camo shorts with a Hawaiian shirt? But now, I love those spots. I wait for the shift, or the interrupted phrase, anticipate it, beat the steering wheel, smack the air. I play this disc over and over and over and over and over... And I'm usually one who craves variety. But there's plenty of it, just within this one CD. Love the lyrics. And the concerts... Go. Words cannot describe.

Album: 4 stars: Live set: 5 stars

Twenty One Pilots, the Columbus, OH-based duo consisting of Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun, released this, their debut album, in early 2013. I had listened to it before and it didn't really resonate all that much with me. Then I saw these guys in concert recently (more on that later), and I simply had to give this another listen.

"Vessel" starts off with several can't miss tracks, each of which could be a radio single, if commercial radio were still any good, which of course it isn't. The surging "Odd to Sleep" sounds like it could be Ben Folds from 15 years ago. "Holding On To You" sounds musically like it came straight from Phoenix, but then Twenty One Pilots adds some rapping. "Migraine" is an all-out rap song, but one that actually is fun to listen to. "House of Gold" is a lighter tune, with some folksy influences. If there is a theme developing, it is that Twenty One Pilots is the curious mix of piano/keyboard-driven pop with a healthy doses of rap. I am not a fan of rap, generally speaking, reasons why I probably didn't give this album a fair chance when I first listened to it. Upon reflection, I am more impressed by the melodies, and the smart pop hooks that appear throughout. In all, I am very happy I gave this album another spin.

As to that live set, I saw these guys last weekend at the Bunbury music festival here in Cincinnati, where they played a late afternoon set on the main stage, and they KILLED. Starting their set with "Ode to Sleep" (and playing most of the tracks rom "Vessel"), the duo played a 60 min. set with a level of energy and excitement that I hadn't seen in a long time, and was simply infectious for the crowd, which ate it up.
