This review is from: Vestiges of War: The Philippine-American War and the Aftermath of an Imperial Dream 1899-1999 (Paperback)
Am researching a book on the life of David Fagen, whose story is one of the many presented in this remarkable book about the bloody, unnecessary, Philippine-American War at the turn of the 20th century. Read it and you'll understand why we Yankees are loved and hated in that beautiful but tragically dysfunctional land.
A large collection of stories, essays, articles, photos, art and other cultural material beautifully assembled as an academic collection of cultural perspectives aimed at both a Philippine and American readership. This is a serious work which explains, I think, more about the complexity of Philippine nationalism and its many assets and flaws, than any other work I've been priveliged to absorb. Visually stunning. |
