More About the Author

In the corporate world, Phoenix was a professional writer and editor for 23 years. Before that, she was a registered veterinary technician, working with small animal clinics and wildlife rehab centers. Today she lives on a 27-acre farm with a handful of ponies, dogs, cats, chickens, guineas and goats. Mostly, she gets to write the books nearest to her heart, whether they be sexy paranormals set in Arthurian times or near-future medical thrillers. She has a secret soft spot for slash and angst. Then again, that's probably not so much a secret after all...

This is a delightful little book, about 100 pages long. It's a series of sketches, reminiscences about the author's love for animals and her experiences through her teen years working in veterinary clinics. I read it in a couple of hours and look forward to the sequel.

It could be great for a child, but you might want to know the first chapter explains very frankly the details of a bull's vasectomy and the punchline to the second chapter concerns menstruation. It might be more suitable as a YA book -- or maybe I'm just overly prudish.

Sometimes I have difficulty deciding on a rating, but there was never a doubt in my mind that this book deserved every one of its five stars. I'm about 10 years older than Phoenix and I definitely remember being stopped from doing things because I was a girl so I can certainly identify with Phoenix's troubles in that area. I loved every one of the animal stories but I must confess to a special feeling for Jess, the large golden retriever because he reminded me of my dog, Kelly. The writing and editing of this book were really great and the imagery was simply fantastic. I live just northeast of Dallas and my daughter is a senior at Texas A&M, and Phoenix wasn't exaggerating about how hot it gets in Texas in August! I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and I'm eagerly awaiting the sequel. If you love animals and like reading about them, then this book is absolutely a must-read.

I picked this book up not knowing what to expect (I like animals but can't say I'm an animal junkie) and was very (very!) pleasantly surprised. An autobiographical account of the author's first encounters with animals and her desire to work with them as a vet, her struggle to overcome obstacles (not least the social ones of the time, but also financial and emotional ones) and her experiences - all recounted in a candid, fresh voice and with a fast pace that had me turning the pages all the way to the wee hours of the morning. Highly recommended - this is a deep and yet funny and sometimes very moving read.
I look forward to part 2.

This is a short book and a fast read. Well written vignettes take us through the protagonist's first year of college but it abruptly ends- leaving you hanging with the big questions "What happened next?" and "Where is the denouement?!" I checked the author's page to see if perhaps there is a full length book that tells the rest of the story, but had no luck. In sum, a good read that frustratingly leaves you wanting more.

I was slightly dissappointed with this book. She talks about her teenage years before really becoming a Vet Tech. It has a lot of good stories but overall it doesn't give much insight into what a Vet Tech does now (It does say "The Early Years"). Just when I thought we were getting into more infomration that I wanted to hear, the book ended.

And yes I know it was only supposed to be 100 pages, but it felt like she just stopped and published some of the book. There was no conclusion, or even a sensible pause. The stories were all right, but nothing like McSparren fantastic book All God's Creatures or even James Harriet's books.
Mediocre at best.

Memoir of a young animal lover who was determined to become a veterinarian but didn't have the money for college.

I picked up this book free during an Amazon giveaway. The narrator is a typical teen, utterly focused on herself, and the stories focus more on her than the animals and are heavily salted with "what I learned from this" commentary. It's rather short, so I found I was finished while I was still trying to decide whether to give up on it or not, but has little to recommend it.

as a veterinary technician, i was super stoked that this book came out! agree with another reviewer that it's not complete and just sort of ends, however i'm willing to bet there's more stories to come- and i can't wait to read them!
