superb,
This review is from: Veteran's Day: The Tom Russell Anthology (Audio CD)
I like to say that there are only two types of music fans out there. Those who love Tom Russell and those who have yet to hear one of his songs. Unfortunately, there are more of the latter at this time.
This compilation is a must for those who are fans of the singer/songwriter. It contains numerous songs from hard to obtain albums, his greatest songs and some new songs. It is also the perfect Christmas gift to give to a friend who has yet to hear any of Tom's songs. Once you give this collection a listen, you will wonder why Tom Russell is not a household name. Russell is a born storyteller. His songs, for those who have yet to hear any, are sort of like a mixture between Harry Chaplin and Dave Alvin/Gene Clark. Among my favorites on this collection is "Touch of Evil" and "The Pugilist at 59". Great stuff

I became a Tom Russell fan when he released Borderland. I saw him in person 3 times. I am hooked on Tom and his music and the music of his friends Gretchen Peters, Dave Alvin, etc. This two disc compilation is a nice review of Tom's music. If your new to Tom, this is a great introduction. I have every CD he's released since Modern Art. I never grow tired of listening to Tom. If you like this compilation, I'd recommend the previously mentioned Borderland, and Modern Art. My real favorite is Hotwalker--totally different than anything you've heard before.

Tom Russell may never be fully discovered as what he is... one of the greatest singer songwriters of his time. so if you have to Tom put out a million Anthologies until the rest of the world "gets it". the nice thing about this anthology is it's hand picked by Tom himself and it had me revisiting some earlier material i hadn't listened to in a long time. if you haven't heard Tom Russell before start here, if you're a fan and like me haven't pulled out the old vinyl versions of his earlier stuff take another listen, what a song writer, what a singer!

Veterans Day is a must own CD. Tom Russell is the best western/folk/country/Americana singer/songwriter in the business. There is a hint of Hank Williams, Bob Dylan, Marty Robbins, Woody Guthrie and Johnny Cash in his songs, however he is an original all the way. These great songwriters would welcome Tom as a worthy peer in a "guitar pull".
This double CD contains his best work (37 cuts) which include my favorites: US Steel, Navajo Rug, Veteran's Day, Manzanar, The Rose of the san Joaquin, Blue Wing, The Sky Above, the Mud Below, The Pugilist at 59, Tonight We Ride and his signature song - Gallo Del Cielo. This collection is one that will never grow old or become out of date. Tom is a master in his craft. Go out and buy a copy today; better yet, buy 2 or 3 and give them to your friends who would enjoy listening to a superb story teller at his best.

This is a good two disc set. Not by any means the definitive Tom Russell collection. Several great songs from his last four albums were omitted. While this is a good set it is only a window into the beautiful world of one of the greatest troubadours of our time. Tom Russell is in the same class of artist as Guy Clark, Willie Nelson, and Chris Wall. This set does not represent that very well.

It seem that every album Tom has put out in recent years is an anthology.
Question of the day, "How many Tom Russell albums contain "Gallo del Cielo" and "Navajo Rug?" It is past time to retire these two songs from the repertoire. I know the album title says "Anthology" but Tom's long time fans want some new stuff |
