Review

Barely a day goes by without a preschool teacher asking me for ""age-appropriate"" nonfiction titles on a particular topic. Some requests are easy - apples, winter. Some are more abstract - community, kindness. (Today's preschoolers work so much harder --http://shelf-employed.blogspot.com/2010/11/veterans-day.html

I'm a music teacher and I purchased this book to help students understand what Veterans Day is as we prepare music for a school ceremony.
The book is 24 pages with probably less than 20 words per page. There are real photos for illustrations and the illustrations were chosen with great care to illustrate the text. There is a table of concents as well as a picture glossary and index which would be helpful to reading teachers to help students nagivate a book.

The text starts with, "What is a Holiday?" on page 4. On page 5, it explains that Veterans Day is a holiday in November and you see a Navy band parading. Pg. 6, "Who are Veterans?" It tells of the 5 parts of the military with the logo for each. It explains that some veterans have fought in wars while others help people in the US. For helping in the US, there is a photo of veterans helping with sandbags for a flood.
It explains that some veterans help people in different countries. There is a photo of what I guess to be a woman solider (you can see longer hair out of her helmet) bringing a box of what might be food to a person in I'm guessing the Middle East. She has clear goggles on for sand stroms. It has the Tomb of the Unknown Solider and the president laying a wreath. It doesn't explain the meaning of the Tomb of the unknown soldier so you could stay with the text, "The president of the US visits ... and next page "lays a wreath"... A teacher can elaborate for older grades or leave it as is for the younger grades.

There is a section on Pgs. 14-22 about celebrating Veterans Day. Again it's simple, to the point, with excellent photos.

For limited words, this book explains Veterans Day extremely well in a small book (6 inches by 7 inches) that works for all elementary students.
