This is an excellent primer for operators of breeding kennels. The first section describes genetic defects and the need to screen for affected breeders/carriers. Part two details breeding management, including information on the relevant physiology of both the male and female and care of the dam and the newborn pups. An important part of this section deals with identifying the temperament of each pup and matching it with the needs and temperaments of prospective buyers. The last part discusses prevention and control of diseases, recognizing when an animal is sick and understanding various diagnostic tests that veterinarians may use. The bibliography lists highly technical veterinary texts as well as useful supplementary reading for the layperson. For larger veterinary collections.
