I have to admit that this album is my favorite among all the Noir Desir's. It starts by a great song and ends up by a better one. A little end note:if you like ND try also Diabologum.

I discovered Noir Désir when I was going to school in Tours in 1989. I made the unfortunate mistake of lending the cassette to a KSMU deejay who liked it so much he skipped town with it. I finally got a colleague to pick up a CD for me on a business trip, and somebody broke into my house and made off with it. I've managed to replace it again, so I am hoping that the criminal element will just buy their copies from Amazon now instead of stealing mine! Seriously, this is a great CD, way ahead of its time, and my husband loves it even though he doesn't understand French. (He just makes up his own words and sings along. ::grin::)

Yes, there is no rock band anywhere or maybe at any time that can compare to Noir Desir. When I first noticed Cantat's vocals I was in awe of their extraordinary authenticity and energy. He has an authority almost a royalty I have never encountered before in any band or vocalist with the possible exception of Cobain, I became somewhat obsessed about how can this man sing so devilishly well. Bertrand Cantat may be onstage or in the studio, but where ever he is, he is not acting; he is not a performer; he lives his life onstage as he lives it offstage, when he is singing you get Cantat 100%; that is 100% his reality, 100% his experience and 100% his way. He will not accept or borrow a style or mannerism from sources other than his own. His relationship with reality which is also his genius and his art is accomplished his way only and than only at that moment when Cantat and his reality conjunct. Few of us live even small portions of our lives in such surreal clarity and solitude of selfness or selfishness. Cantat has not been introduced to concepts of restriction of self, and it comes through powerfully in his music. Maybe I am wrong. Maybe I am under some near insane illusion. But near insane illusions are Noir Desir's prime subject matter, in the english worded songs anyway. Naturally I don't know Cantat and I definitely don't understand French, but when hearing emotions sung with this intensity, one false note, it stands out. There are no false notes in Cantat's vocals; there is no ambiguity, no mistakes, and no self-consciousness (and to quote a P. Smith song) there is no guilt. None of this is to be found in Cantat's vocals and the band members are equally ferocious. I discovered this group all too recently. I was not prepared; I was not ready when I first heard Cantat transmute effortlessly from choirboy sweet gentleness to horrific battle screams of attack in seconds. His voice is ruthless and exquisite. B. Cantat was born in Pau France. Vikings attacked and conquered Pau in 800 AD. I am not surprized. When Cantat sings "let them burn" in English, this gal from Indiana hears the French revolution. That cliche about art imitating life? With Noir Desir, life doesn't even imitate life. This next statement may sound like a cliche. It isn't. This music is the real thing. Bertrand Cantat sings his life as his life is happening to him, violent angry unbearable cajoling pleading threatening. Is music like this uncommon? Is music like this possible? Antonin Artaud was similar in the demands he placed upon himself as an artist. Noir Desir fans are recipients of a gift 100% direct from a human soul. In public, on stage and in person Cantat's entire being is made available to all, with every triumph and every flaw uncensored unpostured unclothed. In one video Cantat clutches the mic with a grip that causes his thumb to bleed profusely and he doesn't notice. This is art at great cost. This music, these songs composed of undiluted never questioned violence and passion are the source of Noir Desir's authenticity power and ultimately destruction. Off and on, here or there, now and again is not Noir Desir. For this band and their front man there seem to be two choices: off or on, always or never; like being alive, either you are or you are not. I hope someone understands this review. I am not sure I do. I am lost, but I'm not stranded....yet.

yes Noir Désir is the greatest rock band from france, and i love them so that i could say they are the best's of the world...and yes , one could say that Veuillez ... is their best album, but is there really a best album of N.D? In my mind they're all marvellous, and more, each of their song is a miracle. They have an amazing sound and B. Cantat's voice is a gift of god, sure. They had caught the rage, and no one know how to transmit it like them. My favorite songs on this album: what i need, sweet Mary, Joey.
