Divas Live,
By Doug Brown (Anchorage, Alaska) - See all my reviews
This review is from: VH1 Divas Live (Audio CD)
Divas Live is my 15th SACD disk. It's a horrendously poor recording! I am shocked. My previous SACD disks have all been from very good to jaw-dropping amazing. This recording (...) big time. Tizzy, harsh highs, thin midrange... just pathetic. The music is fine but I'll probably never listen to it again. Unacceptable for an SACD recording, IMHO.

This is my all time favorite CD. It is beautiful. All of these women have incredible voices and this CD is great becauase it has 5 of the best voices (and Carole King who is a fantastic songwriter) in music singing their greatest hits!! I have 5 Celine Dion Cd's, 1 Gloria Estefan, 1 Shania Twain, 4 Mariah Carey and 1 Aretha Franklin Cd and I still bought this CD!! It is 10 times better than Diva's Live 99!! This Cd will be am asset to anyones collection! The duets and the group songs are beautiful. BUY THIS CD!!

The best collaborations/concert ever recorded.,
By A Customer
This review is from: Vh1 Divas Live (Audio CD)
I was unable to watch the concert, but the CD is just bursting with energy. It is great. If I were you, I would order this CD now. There is a chemistry between the artists. Gloria was good . Shania and Celine were also great. The Queen of Soul, proved why she is the Queen of Soul. But the star of the show was Ms. Show-stopper, herself, Mariah. She is one of the few singers that can sing live and still sound good. Aretha and Mariah collaborated for a soulful rendition of 'Chain of Fools', the other divas icluding special guest,Carole King collaborated for a beautiful rendition of "You've got a friend". It was beautiful. But the best song by far, is "A Natural Woman". All the divas, including Carole King, poured their souls into this song. Just listening to them give their all into this song, could bring you to life. It was well performed, and this album should be well received.

Divas' Parade,
By heeven@usa.net (Rosario, Argentina) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Vh1 Divas Live (Audio CD)
By reuniting five of the most celebrated singers in the world today, VH-1 reached high in this concert in benefit of preserving music education in schools. The album starts off with the best - selling diva of all time, Mariah Carey, who performs two huge hits with a curiously cracking voice. To shake the night all up, the next diva to appear is Gloria Estefan, who shows why she is one of the few female vocalists who can perform and, at the same time, entertain her fans live. Beautiful Shania Twain sparkles in both of her hits and Celine Dion shines on her own plus dueting with Carole King in her live version of "The Reason". Highlights include "Chain of Fools", where Aretha proves why she still is the Queen of Soul (although sometimes Carey outshines her in this song) and "You've got a friend", lead by special guest Carole King. But it is in the two closing numbers that this album really goes off. The impetuosity of "You make me feel like a natural woman" and the festivity of "Testimony" with its dueling pair, Aretha and Celine at the end, states why these five singers can be called divas.

They did a WONDERFUL job!!,

This is definitly one of my favorite CD's! I've always been a big fan of Shania, Celine and Mariah in particular although all the singers did a great job. I would also like to give special note to: Celine Dion who, after seeing this production, got me to go out and buy all her albums. She sounds absolutely beautiful live, if you think she sounds good on her albums, buy this! you'll be amazed! Also, the quartet with Carol King was another 'must-listen' too. Enjoy!!

The Origionals,
By A Customer
This review is from: Vh1 Divas Live (Audio CD)
This tape ROCKS. Now, let me maturly tell you why. Mariah is one of those great voices of the decade, perhaps even century, and lets it shine here (though she did better in '00, believe it or not). She gets the crowd geared up and ready for a divarific evening, and delivers a good percentage herself. Then Gloria takes the stage, and the variety is set there, and you know that this eclectic evening is gonna be good. She makes you dance and get into the music. Her voice is low, yet strong. She delivers. Up to bat next is the then-unknown Shania Twain, who leaves all too soon. Aretha seems to try to outdo Mariah, but has hard competition, on their rendition of "Chain of Fools". Celine was probably supposed to be the Ultimate diva of the eve, yet doesn't fit up to it. She rocks the house nevertheless. When Shania, Celine, Carole (surprise!), and Gloria team up, you doubt if it can be topped. Yet When Mariah and Aretha join in for the finale, the box is wrapped, sealed, and decorated. The _final_ finale ("Testimony")seems a bit misplaced, but Aretha, Celine and Mariah still shine. Standouts: Megamix, Chain of Fools, You've Got A Friend {Oh, _that_ Carole}, and of course, Natural Woman. In light of the last two Divas, here's a dream line up of five egos- oops, Divas, that might work nicely together. Patti LaBelle, Toni Braxton, Madonna, Bette Midler, and Jennifer Lopez (the year's Shania). Also, with guest stints from Christina and Barbara, the evening will compete with the origional. Peace.

To have all of those singers in one room, is what makes this CD worth listening to. When all of the divas sing together in the end, it will send chills up your spine to know that these great artists worked hard for a great cause- Music for Kids.

The "divette" kicks some diva-butt!!!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Vh1 Divas Live (Audio CD)
It is hard to choose one favorite singer out of the bunch put together by VH1, but I have to single out Gloria Estefan. The self-proclaimed "divette" outdoes herself by injecting a lot of energy into her performance and music. In the last several years she has also been able to leave her shyness behind and open even more to becoming a better entertainer. Look for Gloria standing out with her performance of "heaven's what i feel" and in the diva-collaboration "you've got a friend," even matching Celine Dion in one of the verses!

The Definitive Divas Concert,
By andygold82@hotmail.com (the United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Vh1 Divas Live (Audio CD)
The first Divas concert will undoubtedly be heralded as the greatest for many years to come - not simply because it was the first, but because the artists deliver performances of a lifetime and every all tastes of diva-dom are catered for...The show begins with Mariah Carey, the modern day legend, adn greatest Diva of them all. Mariah has the ability to deliver on every live performance. Should the show start with ballad or dance? Well, both! as My All effectively preceeds directly into the dance remix. Gloria Estefan gets everybody on their feet with her blend of Latin and Dance, as does Shania Twain with her own unique sound that has since become world famous. Then there's Celine Dion and the voice that launced THAT ship. Yes she sings THAT song, and very well, in fact. The only criticism is that it sounds as if she wants to outshine everybody. But she can't... simply because the Queen of Soul herself has graced the stage. Aretha Franklin is timeless. Her ability to get the crowd moving is unparalleled. Only in her duet with Mariah Carey, Chain Of Fools, is she outshone a few times. However, she is redeemed by a rousing version of Natural Woman in which all the Divas collaborate, and in which Aretha tames Celine's valiant attempts to steal the show. In comparison, Divas 99 cannot compete with it's messy structure and truly puzzling list of artists (Brandy, a diva? - Whitney herself was puzzled by that one. And Elton John? The joke lasts about three and a half minutes.) Divas 2000 suffered from the fact that it was a tribute to Diana Ross, adn there were too many people present. The 5 Ladies of Divas 98 made for a well structured and streamline performance. Of course Divas 2000 had Mariah Carey making yet another spectacular performance, remixing Love Hangover with her Heartbreaker, but not even the great Mariah could save a show with a lineup flawed by it's size and confused setup. If Divas are your thing, then Divas 98 is the CD you need to buy, and by "Divas", in the 98 show, we are talking real female VOCALISTS - those who can do spectacular things with their voice - something the other shows lacked. |
