5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful album
This has always been one of my favorite black metal (can you call it that?) albums. Granted, it's not perfect, but I gave it 5 stars since it's been a constant presence in my CD player for about 9 years. The only negative comment I can make is that it might be a little repetitive, but that doesn't bother me too much. The vocals (provided by Legion, former Marduk...

1.0 out of 5 stars pure dissapointment
I bought this cd few months after its release. I knew three things about it.First: members from abruptum/marduk (though i didn't like these bands much, i took that as a "quality insurance" because i respect their work)
Second:slow atmospheric doom/black metal, and Third: i read somewhere "in the style of Katatonia" (they hadn't released brave murder day yet). This one...

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful album, June 23, 2006
This review is from: Via Dolorosa (Audio CD)
This has always been one of my favorite black metal (can you call it that?) albums. Granted, it's not perfect, but I gave it 5 stars since it's been a constant presence in my CD player for about 9 years. The only negative comment I can make is that it might be a little repetitive, but that doesn't bother me too much. The vocals (provided by Legion, former Marduk vocalist) are great and harsh, and stand in stark contrast to the music, which could not in the least be described as black metal. The riffs are more in the vein of melodic Black Sabbath, mostly consisting of single string, often blues-based melodies. The riffs seem to meander all over the place, but always maintain the same motif. It's rather simple, but quite unique and beautiful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Original "black metal", March 23, 2010

"It" once described this album as "black metal as if played in the 70s".

I totally agree. Melodic, progressive, long songs (and titles!).
This album is totally unique. Either you love it or hate it.

If you expect traditional black metal, stay away from this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Behold Ophthalamia, So Fearsome in its might....., September 11, 2000

So begins the majestic intro to a great Black Metal CD. This band includes It from Abruptum, and Pre-Marduk Legion.(Marduk fans, this is NOTHING like Marduk, it is slow, Atmospheric, beautiful, with no brutality whatsoever.) Yet this is what makes the cd so great. I listen to this whenever i want to relax and just be by myself ,alone, in a world of imagination. Fans of Opeth, Dimmu Borgir, Fatal Embrace, and Naglfar will like this cd. This is also a great introduction to the Swedish B.M. scene. So if you are a B.M. fan, you should own this.

That was it...i made many attempts to listen to the whole cd but in vain...it was just unbearable. Indeed slow doom/black metal, but the most atonal and uninteresting riffs, mediocre vocals and as for the atmosphere i "found" it only in the poetic titles and the well-looked-after artwork and cd cover. A true dissapointment.
