Editorial Reviews

Review

“I love this book! Barbara paints a funny as well as poignant picture of dating, romantic love, parenting an adult daughter, and sex after sixty. Barbara tells the truth and this book vibrates with razor sharp wit!”—Joan Rivers

“A smart, witty, sometimes hilarious coming-of-age novel for and about the boomer generation… This realistic and funny novel will appeal to women of all ages, while men should find it attractively controversial." (Kirkus)

"Anny's restless and sweetly funny search for true love, meaningful work, and a happy family is ageless--and a poignant portrait of a generation that's not yet ready to fade away." (Publishers Weekly)

"A refreshing glimpse at love after 60 . . . The Viagra Diaries is frank, open, honest, and fun." (Booklist)

"This book is truly unique and rings with truth. It is both delightful, smart and filled with humor and humanity. I couldn't put it down."—Dianne Baker, Actor, Producer, and Director of Motion Pictures and Television at Academy of Art University

"Barbara Brooker's incisive portrait of male-female relations today is suffused with ageless charm, candor and humor. A delightfully fluent, readable book."—Janine Canan, author of Messages from Amma

I love this book! I love that Anny Applebaum defies the fallacy of age. I laughed out loud at the irreverent humor and wit. But most of all, I love Anny's struggle to find herself and her essence and the fabulous love affair she has with Marv Rothstein. Through it all she discovers she can have it all: love, laughs, fame, fortune, and sex. Thank you, Barbara, for giving women another example of what's possible. Barbara Rose Brooker has written a romantic novel that could mostly happen to people of any age. The interesting thing is that her lovers are in their 70s. They have the usual struggles with the dynamics of relationships, but they bring a lot more baggage from other relationships along with health concerns and end of life issues. The tendency of the public is to want to see people in their 70s as beyond romance and relationship issues. As Baby Boomers age into their 60s, more and more of the public are learning to see elderly people the way Barbara Rose Brooker portrays them.

The protagonists are Anny and Marv. Each is a veteran internet dater and they meet through JDate. Anny violates all the rules of internet dating safety by meeting him at a bar and then getting into his car and going to his place on the first date. He begins kissing her and, not surprisingly, asks for sex right off the bat. She negotiates this mine field and comes out safely, reaching the conclusion that Marv is not for her.

"Obviously, Marv's not relationship material. He's into image, money - not to mention he's still in love with his ex-wife. He's a cliché, living on his past glamour. Anyway, I prefer professorial types. And haven't I had enough with emotionally unavailable men? Relationships that go nowhere? Am I once again attracted to a man I don't like?" (p. 7)

We hear many times that Marv is emotionally unavailable. When he is after sex, he is charming and attentive. After sex, there is no emotional warmth left over as he wants the woman to hurry away and be sure to take everything she brought with her.

A gift from a friend who meant well. Contrary to most of the reviewers, however, this shallow, cliched book with a self-aborbed protagonist and weak plot made me run for the richly-woven tapestries of Garcia Marquez, Ondaatje, Verghese, Patchett. I enjoy a light read once in a while, but life is too short to waste time on this.

The characters all seem to be so desparately trying to act young that it became annoying. Also, too much emphasis on "4 inch heels, black shiny boots, Black outfits and fedoras", etc. Such obsession about looks and finding a man. This is just a sex and the city for 70 somethings. Fluff and not even amusing.

I am 65 and even though she had a nice life and a lot of friends her relationships with men seemed forced and weird to me

I am an over 60 female person hoping to find love. I saw the author on some TV shows, it seemed like there might be some insight into the mind of an over 60 man. Not so much. Her premise is that Viagra empowers men to behave as badly as they did in their younger life. I don't buy that and was rather disappointed in the book, very one dimensional.

Things are the same as they always were. Select a bad boy and they will behave badly, Viagra or not.

A quick read, might serve as beach fare but I was neither amused nor edified.

This was such a fun read!! The characters are so true to life, funny and real.....
It let me look at this over 60 dating with more humor than I believed was possible - even found myself laughing out loud at times.............
I'm going to buy it for several friends who have recently begun dating again after many years....

I really don't agree the seemingly acknowledged context that most of us are primarily using Dating Internet sites for a role in the hay. Eeyond that, the book held my attention long enogh to finish it.
