I have been running this little skeeter vacuum lamp in the garage for the last week. It picks up 3-5 skeeters every night (and rarely other flying insects) that would otherwise enter our home from the garage. As noted in the other review not all skeeters are dead when I inspect the lamp in the mornings ... but they sure are not well. I am concerned about the proprietary, non-standard micro-neon bulb this device uses -- it has been working great but I just know it will eventually burn out. The device comes with a phone number to call (for replacement bulbs?) but they surely cannot be found on the web. I do recommend it for indoor and garage use. Using these lamps outside is generally not useful b/c they catch mostly moths.

so... this thing seems to work. i bought it to catch the occasional mosquito that finds its way into my place and terrorizes me at night. the first night i had it, i tested it outside and found a few skeeters as well as a few other little winged pests inside. i've since tested it inside; i leave it running at night, so it's the only light on. it's more or less silent. i also leave it running while i'm at work. one thing to consider, is that this thing uses a fan to suck the pests in... if you turn it off, the fan turns off, which means the prisoners can escape. so your options are to either wait until they die (included instructions claims 8 hours, but i'm not so convinced of this), find a method to cover the top while you take it outside to release them, or just leave it running all the time. i've been experimenting with placing some packing tape (sticky side up) in the collection chamber. this seems to work sometimes, sometimes not. maybe some are stronger than others. maybe fly paper would be better. if you're wondering about the size, it's about 7.5 inches tall, and the cone thing on top is about 7.5 inches in diameter at its widest point. it runs off standard 120V wall power, the ac dc adapter it comes with outputs 12v 500mA, and the power cord is about 6.5 feet long. also... as if there's anything that isn't anymore, it's made in china.

lastly, to explain the missing star, i'll note that while there was no apparent packaging damage, the unit that was shipped to me had a little tear in the screen covering the collection chamber. i didn't really want to deal with the return process, so i just patched it with some packing tape.

***EDIT 24 AUGUST 2010***

I'm subtracting a star because the lamp semi-burned out (light is on, but very weak) after only 3 days of occasional use. I'm requesting an exchange from Amazon. I'll re-rate if the second unit performs better.

EDIT: FEBRUARY 2014: We've had one unit with a sporadic bulb. Will illuminate if you press one connector down with your finger. It's trashed. Another one got to be so noisy, we had to trash it. STILL good products, but shelf life of 2-3 years running almost constantly! Not bad!!!!!! Blow off the fan occasionally and these little boogers keep working!

EDIT: OCT 2013: They are still working wonderfully. I have noticed they will occasionally start to make a loud vibration noise after collecting dust on the fan blades. Simply blow them off with compressed air and they're back to new! I recently put one in my garage for fun.. It's probably got 20 mosquitoes in it from this week!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

EDIT: JAN 2013, we now have 4 of these in our home... STILL WORKING GREAT!

EDIT: OCT 2012: We had new floors put in recently and had to leave the windows on our home open to air out the glue fumes.. thus, stinkin mosquitoes came in by the bunch.. these little traps had more than 10 critters EACH! I'm continued to mbe impressed by these little things... I'm going to buy more for other rooms of the house.

EDIT: They are STILL WORKING! Nice product.. even if you have doubts, give them a try. Our two run 24/7. You occasionally have to brush off the debris the fans catch.. which is expected.

EDIT: OCT 2012: STILL WORKING GREAT! Just checked them this morning and there is a group of dead mosquitoes. I'm SO pleased.

We have two in our home, and I enjoy seeing what they catch! I emptied them again last night and could not believe the number of mosquitoes! Those of you that say they don't work must not be placing them in productive locations.

I bought this as an experiment, and consider it a complete failure. Within 1 month of turning it on, the catch area screen was rusting, the unit wouldn't turn on, and while it was on for a few weeks it probably caught a total of 20 or 30 mosquitoes. That's pitiful, considering as soon as I walk out my door at night I am practically swarmed with mosquitoes. Within 30 seconds multiple mosquitoes are landing on my skin trying to bite me.

I have a bit of experience with mosquito traps. I originally got the Lentek MK-12 a few years ago, which worked amazingly well when I first turned it on. I estimated (by counting a sample clump) that I was easily catching thousands of mosquitoes per month. However, after I turned it off for a while (because it worked so well) it never worked quite right after that, due to various problems. Successful mosquito trapping involves multiple elements (scent, CO2 emissions, heat signatures, blue light, strong suction fan) that all have to be working properly.

This product description said the right things, but failed to perform. So now I have to bite the bullet and buy replacement parts for my Lentek.
