Get to Know Jamie Davis!, January 8, 2009

Jamie Davis is an immensely talented vocalist. He has a rich, clear voice that's hugely appealing--and he can really swing! His sound and style are somewhat reminiscent of Joe Williams, that great 1950s Basie vocalist, with perhaps a touch of Lou Rawls. Some music critics have suggested that this guy is already up there with the best big band singers of all time, and I'm pretty much convinced. Listen to the Amazon song samples for a taste.....
VIBE OVER PERFECTION has a pleasing selection of songs that includes older standards and some very popular tunes from the 1970s. Nice arrangements; no weak tracks. I like the song selection on VIBE a little better than on his previous release IT'S A GOOD THING. Both these recordings have similar accompaniment, with today's version of the Count Basie Orchestra (or at least a big part of it). The band delivers an exciting VIBE throughout, including some enjoyable soloing. This disc is great fun, although it does end too quickly, clocking in at just under 40 minutes.
