1.0 out of 5 stars Includes Alien Invasives
This book encourages the planting of alien invasive plants that tend to ruin native plant ecology. He does an excellent job of teaching people how to do it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally, coverage of an important genus!!, September 29, 2007
This review is from: Viburnums: Flowering Shrubs for Every Season (Hardcover)
Viburnums are widely acknowledged as some of the most useful garden plants, yet to this point coverage of this group in the horticultural literature has been sparse. As such, this book fills a huge void. And coming from one of the world's most respected woody plant gurus, this tome is most appreciated. Its greatest strength is encyclopedic treatment of the garden worthy species supplemented by quality photographs. While some text appears to be lifted from Dirr's other books, the insight offered by the author is invaluable. Anyone gardening in temperate regions can benefit from including this book in their library.

5.0 out of 5 stars A shrub book worth waiting for on Virburnums., November 2, 2007
This review is from: Viburnums: Flowering Shrubs for Every Season (Hardcover)
Great book and photos by an author and grower of this genus with an eye for detail of the plants in USA and UK.
Should be in every Public library and plant references librarys. This reference book culminates by bringing together all the bits and pieces that have been loosely noted in bulletins and other short articles on viburnums.
Well recommended.

Great resource for any horticulturist. plantsman or weekend gardener. Varieties can be so hard to correctly identify, Dirr takes out most of the guesswork. Would highly recommend to all.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book on an important genus, November 2, 2007
This review is from: Viburnums: Flowering Shrubs for Every Season (Hardcover)
The quality of the writing and photography in this book didn't disappoint me. I can only hope that Michael Dirr continues with more books on trees and shrubs, especially ones I can use in the uppper midwest part of the U.S.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thorough, engaging, and scholarly, November 16, 2008
By
Conservative Gardener (FAYETTEVILLE, AR United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Viburnums: Flowering Shrubs for Every Season (Hardcover)
Dirr provides thorough coverage of North American viburnam species. Chapters are devoted to single species and include pictures of the infloresence, fruit, foliage closeups, fall foliage, and shape of mature plant for each species and popular cultivar. Additionally, there are detailed botanical illustrations by his "better half." It is much more thorough text than his book on hydrangeas--as there are more reasons to plant a viburnum. I bought the book because I now have room to start a viburnum collection, but it may have paid for itself with the discussion and photography of deer damage--which should give every reader something important to consider. Another great book written by a scholar who has contributed much to my gardening experiences.

4.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Viburnum Reference, October 2, 2008
This review is from: Viburnums: Flowering Shrubs for Every Season (Hardcover)
Good detailed information on a wide range of viburnums - including many that aren't typically available in the nursery trade. Fills a void that existed in plant information. I just wish there was an easy to read table that summarized the essential plant info for designers to use as a quick reference when choosing plants.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great reference book, February 13, 2008
This review is from: Viburnums: Flowering Shrubs for Every Season (Hardcover)
[[ASIN:0881928534 Viburnums: Flowering Shrubs for Every Season] This book
was ordered for my husband Dorick Corbo, he is interested in horticulture and is a part time landscaper. Donald Wyman says that "many viburnums have decided value every season of the year. They are sturdy shrubs and are subject to few pests." Michael Dirr gets his information about plants out in the field from more than one area or continent.

His information on viburnums is excellent and the colored pictures are outstanding.

I've never heard or seen another book on viburnums. Donald Wyman is on Dirr's reference list.
