4.0 out of 5 stars Just what I wanted
My wife got me this peppermill for Christmas. I am very pleased with it for three reasons. It has a much larger storage capacity (and wider opening) than our last mill. This means I don't have to fill it nearly as often as I used to and I don't spill nearly as many peppercorns on the countertop. There's still some hoppers, but that's my clumsy fault more than anything...

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
They don't show you in the pics of this product that they carved a large signature in black from some chef on the front of these high quality, beautiful mills. I got the pepper and salt mill and they both have it. It is beyond tacky. I should return these it's so hideous. Also, the carved signature is a different size on the salt mill. Why'd they do it? Other than that,...

My wife got me this peppermill for Christmas. I am very pleased with it for three reasons. It has a much larger storage capacity (and wider opening) than our last mill. This means I don't have to fill it nearly as often as I used to and I don't spill nearly as many peppercorns on the countertop. There's still some hoppers, but that's my clumsy fault more than anything. Also, I really like the locking grind adjustment. You can set it from very coarse to powder fine and it doesn't budge over time. Finally, as someone who is in the solid cherry furniture making business, I appreciate the beauty of the wood. Cherry is a hallmark of quality and this peppermill is no exception. The fact that it was Made in the USA was a big added bonus for me as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars The last peppermill you will ever use!, February 5, 2009

This is the BEST peppermill ever! Finally, a peppermill that lasts. I bought my first one well over a year ago and I am happy to report that it is by far the best peppermill I have ever owned. Before finding this product, I had gone through several peppermills, presumably all top of the line (what a joke!) Vic Firth's peppermills are the real deal. The grinding mechanism is superb and it gives me a perfect consistency each and every time; from fine grinds for fish, to medium grinds for gravies or coarse grinds for meats. The mill is easy to clean too with just a few simple steps. Sure, these are some pricey peppermills but you definitely get what you pay for. This will be the last peppermill you will ever use. This is a handcrafted product of excellent craftsmanship, which will complement your kitchen décor and table setting. I love these peppermills so much I have 2 (one in my kitchen and one at my dinner table) and I also have the salt mill too!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Pepper Mill, August 28, 2011

I am really not sure why anyone would not rate this is as an outstanding pepper mill. The mill does exactly as advertised and crushes then grinds the corns. The fine settings are fine, down to almost a powder and the coarse settings are coarse up to cracked. All nice and even and the setting stays where you put it. The capacity is great and I use a lot of pepper in my cooking! Nice natural cherry finish feels unfinished, I tried to oil mine and found the oil just sat on top, so it is already sealed. I found the mill pretty average with regard to filling, no real problems encountered, pretty standard sized opening - no surprises. I suppose my only comment to the manufacturer would be to ask that the base be made about twice as wide as it is. No big deal, as it does not tip over, but in my opinion that is all that stands in the way of this being the perfect grinder. Best mill I have ever used, it mops the floor with the Peugeot products for a lot less money. I will likely give these mills as gifts for Christmas this year. Made in USA too...

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, January 12, 2011
This review is from: Vic Firth Mario 12-Inch Peppermill, Cherry (Kitchen)
A robust professional quality pepper mill. The size is perfect as it fits under our kitchen cabinets. It puts out great quantity and changes courseness of the grind by tightening down the cap screw. I cannot imagine a higher quality product at any price, so if you are a serious cook or want to make an excellent presentation on the dinner table, buy it.

After experiencing problems with my old worn out Unicorn mill, I tried this Vic Firth mill that Mario B. endorses. It is not bad, it looks nice and feels good but it holds so few peppercorns I am constantly filling it and that is not an easy thing to do with this mill. The hole is exceptionally small, I mean really really small and you have to fill around the shaft and peppercorns go everywhere except inside the ever so tiny compartment. With two of us holding the thing we still could barely manage to get it filled and it holds next to nothing for a 12'' mill! The grind is nice though and by turning the bottom screw it ratchets very slightly to each grind. Don't expect huge amounts of pepper to come out of this mill like with the Unicorn, you really have to crank it a lot to get ample pepper, especially when used for cooking. This mill is better suited for table use rather then by the stove for cooking.

So, after all that, I find myself thinking of getting another ugly plastic Unicorn, despite it's problems with the fill hole opening while in use dumping corns everywhere and the grind adjustment spring wearing out after a few years it was still overall a much better mill and while it lasted, the best I've ever used by far. It holds tons of corns and cranks out lots of pepper with little effort. Guess you just can't expect to get more then 4 or 5 years from any mill.
