I've played with all sorts of practice pads and this Vic Firth double sided pad is by far my favorite, as well as the best looking of the bunch. The grey side is the soft and bouncy side, I use this when I'm just starting to work on an exercise. When I feel as if I've worked the exercise to a presentable level I then flip the pad over to the black side. This side is hard rubber with considerably less bounce, therefore it makes you work a little harder. I use this to work my muscles and build the rudiment/exercise into my muscle memory.

A replacement for old reliable,

This pad replaces a Rodgers pad I had since grade school.
Very nice rebound and quiet on the gray side; a harder and more audible on the black. You must be aware that this is both large and heavy, my old pad surface was 6" by 5" which is sufficient for practicing your rudiments. All in all I am very pleased, the pad stays in place and no one complains about the noise.

It looked ok - but the padding comes apart after a little while. The glue that holds the padding is no good. It is a shame because the rest of the materials are good and it is a good size. I complained to the seller - but no response. Keep looking my friend - this is not it.

I think this item is pretty good, but I think that I would like it better if it was a LITTLE bit quieter. But overall, this is just what I needed. It is easy to drum on and makes practicing fun for me. The only problem I had was when I first got it, I was carrying it against my shirt and some of the fabric got stuck to the gummy side. It was kinda hard to get off, but other than that this was a good buy.

I bought this with the intentions of practicing rudiments before buying a complete drum set, so know that I'm not an experienced drummer by any means. Still, I think it's really high quality and two friends of mine (both drummers) complimented it the first time they messed with it. Versatile, good size, no complaints. If you're looking for a pad, it doesn't get much better than this for the price.

-Son's review...
I purched this practice pad about 6 months ago and I do not regrete it because the grey rubber side is like playing on the snare side and the black side doesn't bounce as high because it strengthens your arms/wrists which helps your playing. I loned this to my friend when we were both trying out for our schools drumline, I told him to use the black side until 2 days before tryouts because he had never played a snare or even a drum for that matter and he made it. He told me that he felt that it helped him alot because it did strengthin his arms. But i have to take this back and forth from home to school and the 12 inch is a little big for traveling if you have to do this i would say get the 6 inch ensted.

Pad Curled, not the best feel,

We ordered this pad and it came promptly, however the edges of the pad started to curl within the first few days. My son found he missed being able to screw this onto his stand. After returning this pad as defective, my son's drum teacher bought a new Acquarian Practice Pad and my son liked its action much better.

I use this thing every day. Doesn't have the same snare-like feel that the Invader pads do, but works just as well.

This practice pad is pretty freakin awesome, although its not as described. The description says that it has a wooden base but its not wooden its plastic but this doesnt bother me at all. It feels just like youre playing an actual snare. My only complaint is that the black side doesn't have as much of a bounce as I thought it would but overall Im happy with this pad although if you want one thats even closer to playing on a snare go for the Offworld Percussion Invader V3 practice pad.
