Ease and Excellence in Rolling Pastry/Cookie Dough,
By A Customer
This review is from: Vic Firth Marble Rolling Pin (Kitchen)
With the Vic Firth 12-Inch Marble Rolling Pin, I do not hesitate to make my own pie crusts and rolling out any other type of pastry/cookie dough is very easy and a pleasure. This is the best rolling pin I've every used and the third one I've owned. Because of the marble surface, the dough remains cool and at an even temperature, allowing you to work with the dough easily - the dough remains consistent in texture and does not stick to the rolling pin. The rolling pin is also very easy to clean and store. It's a great product for whatever your "rolling" needs may be. I lent my rolling pin to my mother and I think she's going to keep it and I'll have to purchase another one. Without hesitation, I would purchase this product again and I would give it as a gift.

Chipped, noisy, and shorter than stated,

I wanted a marble rolling pin with handles and a longer-than-10" roller. This one had good reviews (here and elsewhere), Amazon's listing says it's 20" long, it's listed elsewhere as having a 12" surface and a review here called it 12", and I didn't care that it doesn't come with a base/stand. Unfortunately, what I received is only 18" long with a 10" marble roller that has some small chips and divots. And yes, it has metal ball bearings, but I can't imagine they're supposed to rattle noisily every time the rolling pin is moved at all.
I called Amazon to see whether this was some sort of replaceable fluke or I should just get a refund. A very helpful customer-service person told me this pin's in their system as refund-only, no replacements, because they're pulling it to check its description -- apparently because they've been getting a lot of returns. She promptly and cheerfully refunded not only the purchase price but also shipping costs, even though I told her I got free shipping on the order; she said they'd add that amount anyhow to apologize for the trouble. Great! However, when I asked whether I could be notified if they find or get the advertised longer pins (reviews were positive enough that despite this one's specific problems, I'd be willing to try again with the correct length), she said they can't notify me but that I could check the site again in a month to see if the pin was available again. I explained that it's *currently* available, labeled "In Stock" and apparently orderable, and she simply suggested I could try ordering it again in a month or so to see what arrives. So, kudos to Amazon for their lovely return/refund policy and the nice customer-service person I reached, but boos to them for still listing and selling this item even while investigating it after many returns. This is supposed to be a review of the pin, though, not of Amazon's policies. It's 18" instead of the listing's stated 20", and it arrived with a flawed rolling surface and really noisy bearings. I'm giving it a second star because it does roll very smoothly and has comfortable handles. It'd probably do a fine (albeit loud) job, though not on smooth things like fondant with those chips.

This is my first marble rolling pin and I'm very satisfied with it. It's made from good quality, heavy marble and is great for pastries.

I got this rolling pin because my previous wooden pin was not heavy enough to roll out pastry without a great deal of effort. (I recently started baking again, after a gap of several years.) This one works much better, and it rolls easily with good-quality bearings. You shouldn't expect it to be lightweight, but that's not what I was looking for.

I've been baking pies for almost 40 years, having learned at the elbow of my mother, and after using this marble rolling pin for the first time last week, I produced one of the finest, flakiest pie crusts EVER!
Whether it was the weight of the marble or the chill of it, it rolled out my pie crust easier than I've ever before experienced. PLUS, because the dough barely stuck to the marble while I was rolling it out, I used very little flour. I'm very, very happy that I purchased this marble rolling pin. I'd actually wanted one for years, but never got around to actually ordering one. Now, after getting such amazing results, I could kick myself for waiting so long!

I don't know how this item is as a rolling pin. I only know that it arrived poorly packaged, in a box too big for it, with barely any padding (just some crumpled paper) and it was cracked in half with marble "sand" in the package. It is only a 10" barrel as others have mentioned. Although Amazon makes the return relatively easy, it's still a hassle to deal with it and I still don't have a marble rolling pin. I won't be ordering another one of these for fear that I will run into the same problem.

I used to push and pull with my old wooden rolling pin, but
with this, it is heavy and practically rolls the dough out by itself. It's very easy to use once you understand you don't have to push and pull anymore. Rolling out pie dough is a breeze.

I love this rolling pin...,

I love cooking gadgets. I have several rolling pins: an old handmade one that was my mother's, a french style, a long solid one with no handles, a few springerle rolling pins, and now, (thanks to a great friend and my birthday) this one. I used it today to make three different items. I was surprised when I rolled out cinnamon roll dough - it glided over the dough without sticking. I think the weight made such a difference -- I didn't have to fight with the dough to get it to spread out, it rolled out very easily. I also rolled out three pie crusts -- it was a dream. I loved the little sound of the ball bearings, the handles are comfortable (in red to match my kitchen) and the marble is pretty. All I need now is a pin display rack to show it off.

I got this rolling pin as a gift for my Mom and she loves it. It looked exactly like the picture with blonde handles and white/grey marble. I would highly recommend this product.
