Grabs you by the brain,
This review is from: Vicarious (Kindle Edition)
Police detectives, nuns, serial killers and green brains.
What more could you ask from a paranormal thriller? Well when author Jon F Merz writes a story you are guaranteed more. Much more. What starts as a serial killer investigation leads to a battle with the ultimate evil. A cleverly crafted tale that will keep you gripped until the very end. I highly recommend this.

If you loved Jon Merz's PARALLAX, you will love this one too. A gripping tale of a series of unexplained deaths and startling supernatural discoveries lead Detective Curran and a sister of the latest victim on a wild chase into the unknown. Evil lurks in every page making this book a hair-raising, bonechilling experience...keep the lights on!

A book this good at 0.99 is a total steal. Jon F. Merz knows how to craft a tale and give characters that a reader can care about...or loathe. I hate to say much about this book since the less you know, the more you will enjoy it.
What I can say is this... It's a classic good vs. evil story. It's a detective story and can be considered a cross between X Files and Rizzoli and Isles. It's a roller coaster ride. It's just flat good to the last drop. And, we're talking 99 cents, here, people. So, what in God's name do you have to lose? Oh, and don't read this in an old house that suffers from drafts...

I am a huge fan of Jon F. Merz. His writing style always is so easy to follow and paints an awesome picture in my mind. I enjoyed this book and his other books very much. I love them all but my favorite still is PARALLAX.Update: I just re-bought this book for my Kindle, see that is how much I love it!

Hang it until dead. That's what is required just to get to the story in this book.
First, we have the main character getting booted from the FBI for failing to catch a serial killer. Not only is that ridiculous, but the FBI cannot even definitively say there is a killer. Same guy becomes a cop. He finds out about a dead body. The body shows no signs of violence or any reason for dying, so the cop suspects its like the deaths he saw in the FBI. He doesn't even really entertain the notion that the guy could have died of a heart attack or any other natural cause. Enter the Medical Examiner, friend of the cop. The ME does an autopsy with the cop there & discovers the corpse's brain is green. Oh, no, it's just like the others. So, does the ME call the Center for Disease Control? Nope, of course not. Instead, along with the sister of the victim, all three leap to a conclusion that it must be supernatural. Well, a witness did see someone touch the guy on the shoulder before he died. Therefore, it must be something supernatural, right? Later, the woman is in a house where two nuns are killed. Does she call the police? An ambulance? Nope. She leaves the house. She does tell her new cop friend. But, when they finally get around to checking the house, there are no bodies. So, no one does anything. Even though the nuns are MISSING! No one takes a statement from the woman. It's just no big deal. You know what? If someone sees my dead body, leaves, then people come back and its gone & I am missing, I would certainly hope that there would be at least a small investigation. This book is just based on a host of improbabilities based in scant reality. I was rather surprised as Parallax was so good. |
