5.0 out of 5 stars Young Rebus meets "The Wire", December 24, 2009
By
This review is from: The Vice: The Complete First Season (DVD)
If you like Ken Stott in Rebus, you'll like this earlier effort. The subject matter is pretty seamy, particularly for American TV audiences, which is probably why it never made it to PBS or A&E. It does have a little of "The Wire" feel to it, but it's clearly Ken Stott's vehicle as DI Pat Chapel. Stott plays Chapel like a younger Rebus who still feels a certain degree of devotion to the job and not just to the crime at hand. But, like Rebus, Chapel is a flawed character constantly flirting with on the job disasters, mostly of his own making. His subordinates are affected by the nature of the work and his less than stellar management style, but in the end they catch the bad guys.

The series has a few unusual twists and turns with one of the stars coming to an early end in Season 2 which, apparently, is all we're allowed to see of the generally excellent series. The show ran for 5 years on British TV, but so far only the first two seasons have been released on DVD. Since the show originally ran starting in 1998-99 I don't hold out a lot of hope for the balance of the episodes. Again, the subject matter is rough with all the expected violence and nudity, but the acting and scripts are first rate. Just don't expect "Midsomer Murders".

5.0 out of 5 stars WONDERFULLY RICH SERIES, March 27, 2009

This review is from: The Vice: The Complete First Season (DVD)
Didn't know anything about this series but I love British mysteries so I got it and I think it's my favorite....well I do love Prime Suspect and Trial and Retribution but The Vice is compelling. The ensemble cast is extraordinary!
The show deals with the seamier side of life and crime but my fascination was really with the development of the characters who investigate these crimes led by their boss played by Ken Stott. It is so worth watching that I'm saving both Season 1 and 2 to watch again in a year or two. Recommend this to all British mystery lovers especially those who love the grittier ones and ones that deal with a team and not one main character. There's a love interest in this season and it was unusual and totalling engaging. Buy this and Season 2!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Another great British crime series, February 4, 2007
This review is from: The Vice (DVD)
Ken Stott (award winning actor) plays the head of Vice with David Harewood and Caroline Catz as his regular team members. Marc Warren plays the new guy (might recognize from the "The Hustle" series). This great ensemble cast along with gripping storylines make for riveting viewing. This is the complete first series which comprises of three episodes with each having a Part I and Part II.

Episode 1: Daughters - Inspector Chappel (Ken Stott) becomes personally involved while investigating a turf war between two pimps.

Episode 2: Sons - Officer Cheryl Hutchins (Caroline Catz) gets more then she can handle while working undercover to bust a shady nightclub that dabbles in S&M films.

Episode 3: Dabbling - Vice and Drug Squad work together to crack an escort agency that fronts for a huge drug and prostitution ring. One of the Vice Squad members crosses the line at work.

Each episode is a gem and I cannot wait to get the second installment of The Vice. I highly recommend this series.
