5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for any law enforcement officer
As a former student of Professor McCarthy's I found this book to be everything he had ever said and taught me in class. The book details the struggles and problems with dealing with the criminal element and a corrupt hierarchy of beuracracy. Very well done.

3.0 out of 5 stars o.k. for a biography of a vice cop
THIS BOOK FOR THE FIRST FIFTY PAGES READS LIKE A EULOGY OF A VICE COP. THE REST OF THE BOOK HAS SOME GREAT STORIES ABOUT MCCARTHY'S EXPERIENCES AND CASES WHICH HE HAD WORKED ON. THE BEST QUOTES ARE AT THE BEGINNING OF EACH CHAPTER AND ARE KNOWN AS "MOTHER'S MAXIMS"

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent tale of an excellent Vice Cop, November 2, 1997

I had Bill McCarthy as a professor in college. He was a great teacher, but very modest about his accomplishments.
This story paints a picture of one cop against the mob and crooked cops.

This story paralells Serpico's in many ways. If Bill got more publicity, he could be the next Serpico.

5.0 out of 5 stars This was an interesting book about a hard working detective., November 3, 1999

I'm a ninth grader at West Orange- Stark High School. My english teacher assigned my class a research project over anyone who we were interested in. After taking many people into consideration, I chose this one because it is what I am most interested in. I found it to be interesting. From what I have read about Bill McCarthy, he seems to me to be a very heroic person who delt with some of the worst situations a policeman would go through. I could sometimes just picture myself there as he used great imagry to take the reader through good and bad situations. Before reading this book I personaly didn't know much about a cops life. I thought a cop was just someone with a special suit who pulled people over for speeding and shot at the "bad guys". Now I understand more of what a cop has to go through everyday. I highly recomend this book to anyone who is interested.

2.0 out of 5 stars Hes the best cop. Just ask him, May 22, 2006

Another book about a NYPD who thinks hes the best. The stories he tells are dull and have been told hundreds of times before. Too many cops talk about as unflawed. What happened to Joe Wambaugh

I had Bill McCarthy as a professer. He is a brillient man but not at all modest. He uses the time of all the classes he teaches, Ethics, operations, sociology, and others to boast on his accoplishments. Unfortunetly if you buy half of what he deals out you are the biggest fool. His book is a five star fiction but to call it a life story is a joke.

Well written, interesting subject, great cops & robbers yarn. It was fun to read but I dont believe a word of it. I dont know cops like McCarthy. The cops I know try to bust tourists taking photos of the cruise boats at the docks, or slam old ladies against walls at the airport, or drive around in squad cars marked SEAT BELT ENFORCEMENT UNIT. I know, I work with cops every day. Cops naturally seek out and exploit 'easy money' rather than adventures like McCarthy's.
