Book Description

For Tristan Hart, everything changes with one crashing wave.

He was gone for three days. Sucked out to sea in a tidal wave and spit back ashore at Coney Island with no memory of what happened. Now his dreams are haunted by a terrifying silver mermaid with razor-sharp teeth.

His best friend Layla is convinced something is wrong. But how can he explain he can sense emotion like never before? How can he explain he's heir to a kingdom he never knew existed? That he's suddenly a pawn in a battle as ancient as the gods.

Something happened to him in those three days. He was claimed by the sea...and now it wants him back.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Powerful and unique, The Vicious Deep gripped me with its edgy voice and authentic, compelling characters. Zoraida Córdova has created a fearless new world." - Trisha Wolfe, author of Destiny's Fire

"I cannot stress enough how well Zoraida told this story from a REAL guy's POV. It was like being inside a guy's head, no holding back, embarrassing moments and all, and the feelings that guys usually cover with humor or sarcasm are stripped down to their raw truth. It's just awesome on a whole new level. If that was the only reason to read this book, it would be more than enough, but the story has many layers and an amazing plot, too. Original sea creatures, fun side characters that heighten the adventure, and a deep, memorable romance that made me ache-I'm squirming to get my hands on the next book to find out the next part of Tristan's story. He is my new book boyfriend and I will fight for him!Original sea creatures, fun side characters that heighten the adventure, and a deep, memorable romance that made me ache-I'm squirming to get my hands on the next book to find out the next part of Tristan's story. He is my new book boyfriend and I will fight for him!... Zoraida Córdova mastered the written word, and created a fearless new world. This is a must read for every YA lover out there." - YA Bound

"HOLLA! T I love that the mermaids in THE VICIOUS DEEP are being described as something much darker and nastier. As much as I adore Ariel and King Trident and their sweet, weepy moment at the end of The Little Mermaid and their generally likable dispositions, I've always LOVED reading about the vindictive, manipulative side of mythological creatures who have little care for humanity. I can't wait to see what happens with Tristan and his battle to be KING OF THE OCEAN. Sounds so epic." - Tripping Books

"I so appreciated the quirky, funny voice of this fun and fantastic adventure story about a teenaged Brooklyn merman prince, the sea witch out to get him and the human girl he loves." - Sarvenaz Tash

"This mythical tale is a great read told on land and below the sea. These mermaids are not the lovely creatures you know - they may be beautiful but they are also deadly. Córdova gives us a great new ending to The Little Mermaid. Boys and girls will enjoy this book, because while there's a romance here, there's also a good amount of action. 4 Stars." - RT Book Reviews

""[A] multilayered debut . . . what she [Córdova] does exceedingly well is capture an authentic 16-year-old male voice and viewpoint . . .the great title, killer jacket, and edgy portrayal of the mythical creatures should cast a wide readership net." - Booklist" - Booklist

""I am so impressed with THE VICIOUS DEEP–finally a mermaid novel has been done 100% right!"- Jen, Literally Jen" - Literally Jen

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun and entertaining adventure! May 3, 2012
Format:Hardcover
From the moment I first heard about The Vicious Deep, I've been pining for it. Both the promise of being introduced to mermaids that, as stated on the cover, are "not the mermaids you know", and the cover design hinting at this book being more of an adventure than a supernatural romance, got me extremely excited for this title. And the fact that the story is told from a male's point of view only made me want to read it more. Plus, I love all things dark and eerie, and this novel seemed like just the perfect treat for me. And in many ways it was. Yes, there were also a few things that I didn't like, but these tiny little shortcomings didn't stop me from thoroughly enjoying the story. Ultimately, I came out of reading this book feeling impressed and satisfied. The Vicious Deep is extremely unique and breathtakingly imagined YA debut, full of gorgeous creatures and dangerous adventures. Zoraida Cordóva is a talent to be reckoned with, her writing - both powerful and enticing, and there's no doubt in my mind that she can really turn this trilogy into one of the best - if not THE best - supernatural series out there.

I won't lie, I went into reading this novel with huge expectations. With all the hype it was getting, I was pretty much prepared to be swept off my feet. Was I swept off my feet? Yes, most definitely, although not right away. In fact, I found it very hard to get through the first 80 pages or so. The beginning of the story was quite chaotic, jumpy, and hard to focus on. I had serious trouble following the plot line and it took me a while to really get into the story, the awkward relationship between Tristan and Layla being one of the reasons for it. Thankfully, it gets so much better once we get past the first few chapters.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Vicious Deep September 24, 2013
Format:Paperback
This is my first shot at reading mermaids, especially mermaids in the point of view of a merman. The novel reminded me a lot of the Disney Original flick The Thirteenth Year. Not that the main character, Tristan, was 13 or anything, but that some of the "reveals" about his fish family had similar mer-humor.

I can't say that I loved The Vicious Deep. As the book introducing me to YA mermaids, I was a little disappointed. Here are my likes and dislikes:

Dislikes

Typical Paranormal Plot: I expected something grand and magical, but instead, the plot succumbed to the typical A + B = C formula. Tristan didn't know he was magical (clearly by the back of the book we know he's destined for fins), and it takes quite a while for him to discover his mer-talents. Plus, the idea that his father is human and his mother is of mermaid royalty, making him therefore part of the royal court, isn't new or exciting. It's pretty much "read that before" territory. Even when he has to prove he's worthy to become the Sea King in a competition, the adventure he takes just fizzles out.

High School: Really? High school?! Tristan finds out he's a merman, and he decides to go back to high school, even with two merfolk as his "bodyguards" (he claims they're his cousins which is a stretch that I let go), but high school, I cannot. Because it's so dang cool to be a mermaid, and the world seems awesome, but instead I was stuck reading about high school drama. It just didn't fit, and what could have been a really cool fantasy just turned into, again, a typical paranormal.

Likes

Tristan's Voice: His banter with pretty much all the characters rocked.

4.0 out of 5 stars Live To Read May 5, 2012
By Chels
Format:Hardcover
Ready for a summer mermaid read? The author introduces the reader to the main protagonist, Tristan, early on in the novel. Tristan is slowly changing into something he is not quite sure of, but has no choice in. Get ready to dispel the idea that only females can be mermaids...males can be mermaids, er, mermen too! Tristan knows he must get to the bottom of these odd changes and goes in search of his family, unexpectedly diving a little deeper into his past than he would care to.

The story takes off as soon as Tristan goes searching for some answers. The reader will view the eerily quiet and chaotic underwater world through Tristan's eyes. The underwater world is both terrifying and beautiful. The author clearly invested a great deal of time in creating the perfect setting and slight tension underlying the plot, keeping the reader firmly on her hook. The idea of diving into a new world is both exciting and scary, the author evokes both emotions, as well as a host of others, in the reader.

Tristan's character is dynamic during the story. He does seem to mature and grow throughout the novel. The author writes the male point of view with ease, even perfection. The other characters, particularly those of the underwater persuasion, were exciting to meet. The love interest was good, but sometimes felt forced (my only complaint). Overall, this story is highly recommended to young adult/teen readers.
