Book Description

1861266693 978-1861266699 March 28, 2005 First
Built in response to the famous Brabazon Committee's requirements for an aircraft to replace the Douglas DC-3 on European and Empire routes, the Viscount became the world's first turboprop-powered airliner, and the most successful British airliner of all. Operated initially by BEA, the Viscount soon became a favorite of passengers, pilots and aircraft enthusiasts alike. Its heyday was brief, as the advent of the jet airliner soon relegated it to second-line service, in which it remains - just- to this day. This book presents the complete design, development and operational history of the Viscount and its bigger sibling, the Vanguard.

5.0 out of 5 stars another Crowood classic, July 28, 2005
This review is from: Vickers Viscount and Vanguard (Crowood Aviation Series) (Hardcover)
If you are a fan of commercial aviation history, your bookshelf needs this volume. As with all the Crowood titles, this one is generously illustrated, beautifully produced, full of individual aircraft histories and fleet operators, tracing the careers of two of the most illustrious products of the postwar Vickers aircraft company. The Viscount was for its time a resounding sales success, the Vanguard much less so, and the reasons for these divergent fortunes make fascinating reading, a reminder that the best laid plans can be swamped by unforseen circumstances....a fine book.
