5.0 out of 5 stars If you have a cold - this is the stuff!
There is no better product on the market today that helps with the symtpoms of a cold.

Be prepared to sleep though - this stuff will knock you out.

Also, as Lewis Black puts it - Nyquil comes in two colors, red and green and it is the only product that tastes like red and green.

Like most other cold and allergy sufferers, I was miserable to find that Vicks reformulated Nyquil, my "go to" medication in the event of a bad cold, to remove pseudoephedrine, just so they could keep their product on the "over the counter" shelves. The new formula did not work for me at all. Worse, the packaging was practically identical to the original packaging, so it took me a while -- and $$$$ -- to realize that the REASON my beloved Nyquil wasn't working anymore was because the primary active ingredient had been removed. I was displeased, to say the least. And even more annoyed at the time to find that Vicks wasn't even OFFERING a version with the original formula that could be obtained from the pharmacist if you were willing to jump through the hoops of providing an ID and signing legal forms.

Thank you, Congress. I doubt taking effective cold meds away from non-junkies has done jack squat to solve the meth problem, but you sure have succeeded in making the rest of us miserable.

Anyway, I have another cold now, and went to my local pharmacy yesterday to show my ID and pick up some Drixoral -- only to find that since the last time I bought it, the company that makes it has taken it off the market to "reformulate" it, according to the pharmacist, since Drixoral sales had dropped so precipitously since it was removed from regular drugstore shelves and stuck behind the pharmacist's counter. Not AGAIN, I thought, and actually found myself wondering idly if I could get hold of some meth and back-formulate a cold medication that would WORK from it.

BUT THEN!!!! I happened to spy what looked like bottles of Nyquil on the shelves behind the pharmacy counter! Could it be, I thought, that Vicks had added psuedoephedrine back to their product and was making the "real" stuff available to its customers again? I asked the pharmacist, "Wait, is that REAL Nyquil? With pseudoephedrine?" She acknowledged that it was. It is "NyQuil-D." I promptly bought two bottles (all that I am allowed to buy at one time in CA).

I haven't compared the ingredients list on Nyquil D to the ingredients on the original Nyquil yet, but I can confirm that pseudoephedrine is back in at least this version. THANK GOODNESS. I will stand in line, miserable, sneezing, coughing, hacking, and passing out, to buy something that WORKS.

I don't know when Vicks started marketing the "-D" stuff. I'm surprised they didn't contact me and others who wrote angry letters to them when they first reformulated their product to let us know they were selling an effective remedy again... but never mind!

Pass on "regular" Nyquil. Ask your pharmacist for the "-D" version.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not what it was advertised, January 15, 2007
This review is from: Vicks NyQuil Multi-Symptom Cold/Flu Relief- Original Flavor 10 Fl Oz (Health and Beauty)
The ingredients listed pseudoephedrine. I can't take the new stuff and was specifically looking for Nyquil with pseudoephedrine in it. When the bottles arrived, I was disheartened to know that I purchased something I cannot even use. The company never returned my e-mails about sending it back.

1.0 out of 5 stars Wasn't broke, why'd they "fix" it., April 11, 2007

NyQuil's been my cold/flu med of choice for at least the last ten years. I've gladly dragged myself to the store to pick a bottle up when I've felt completely lousy, and had alternatives on hand because I KNEW that it would alleviate my symptoms w/o leaving me feeling loopy or "hungover". Sadly, those days are no more. Since they've changed the formula and removed the psuedophedrine, NyQuil's pretty much worthless :(

I am really disappointed after having spent $7 on a bottle, and not even getting slight relief. I would gladly suffer through the minor hassle of having to approach a pharmacist to get NyQuil from behind the counter if the old formula was available, but I'll take efficiency over convenience when it comes to my health, and will definitely be seeking out another brand.

1.0 out of 5 stars New formula is useless, May 23, 2007

Since they changed the formula & took out the psuedoephedrine, NyQuil is now useless. I learned this after I spent two days taking the stuff with no relief whatsoever. I finally went to my pharmacist who told me that NyQuil changed their formula. She sold me some Advil Cold & Sinus which is working pretty well. Shame on you, NyQuil!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars The Confusing World of Cough Medicines - A Dentist Tries To Clear up the Confusion, October 29, 2005
This review is from: Vicks NyQuil Multi-Symptom Cold/Flu Relief- Original Flavor 10 Fl Oz (Health and Beauty)
There are so many cough formulas on the market, that it is easy to get confused on what to buy. Here is a guide:

Cough medicines are categorized as EXPECTORANTS or SUPPRESSANTS, each may be sold separately or in combination medications. They're also found in cold formulas that include pain relievers (analgesics such as acetaminophen (Tylenol)), decongestants (pseudoephedrine), and antihistamines (diphenhydramine).

The best cough suppressant in my opinion is Codiene; however, it was taken off the market in the 1980's, as there was too much potential for codiene abuse. It is available only through a prescription. I advise always having some codiene cough syrup in the house for those really tough coughs that prevent you from sleeping, and that have not responded to any other cough meausres.

So many manufacturers now combine cough medicines in with many other medicines, such as Tylenol for pain, a nasal decongestant, and/or an anti-histamine. In my opinion, it is best to choose a cough medicine that has ONLY the ingredients that are appropriate for your symptoms. That way you're not wasting your money on unnecessary ingredients, you spare yourself unnecessary side effects, and you're getting only the medication that your body needs.

An EXPECTORANT works by thinning and loosening the phlegm in your lungs so that you can cough it up. GUAIFENESIN is the active ingredient. Take an expectorant with a full glass of water, as water is an excellent expectorant. Also, drink plenty of fluids if you are congested. Hot liquids, such as chicken soup, tea and honey--work especially well. Breathing humidified air also moistens and soothes irritated airways, and loosens mucous.

Cough SUPPRESSANTS work by calming the cough reflex in the brain. While it's not wise to stop a cough that produces colored phlegm (colored phlegm has bacteria in it), suppressants can relieve a dry, hacking cough that's not productive. They're also helpful when you're exhausted from coughing and need to sleep. DEXTRMETHORPHAN is the most common active ingredient in nonprescription suppressants. Common suppressants containing only dextromethorphan include Benylin Adult Formula Cough and Vicks 44. Dextromethorphan has come under attack lately as not being effective in suppressing coughs. There is research on both sides of the issue, some that support it and others that recommend avoiding dextromethorphan. I personally have not found it effective in suppressing my coughs. Once again, the best cough suppressant is Codeine. Codeine can be helpful as a nighttime cough remedy because it has a slight sedative effect on the central nervous system. One warning, you don't want to drink alcohol when taking codiene, as both are CNS depressants and will work together additively. Limit Codiene cough suppressant to night-time (sleep-time) use only.

Be sure and read the label to see what active ingredients are in the cough formula you are buying!

Throat lozenges, cough drops, hard candies, and even simple sugar syrups soothe coughs by coating the lining of the throat. Some lozenges, such as Halls also contain cough suppressant medications. Don't give lozenges to children under age 6 because they can be a choking hazard.

Finally, in 2004, researchers found that CHOCOLATE is a good cough suppressant. The ingredient in chocolate that suppresses coughs is theobromine. It takes about 7 ounces of chocolate to get adequate cough suppressant theobromine. If you use this method, and I am certainly going to try it, use good dark chocolate as your chocolate source, as dark chocolate is richer in theobromine.

1.0 out of 5 stars No longer the "TRUE" NyQuil., August 1, 2007

Like many cold and allergy sufferers, I was hoping I could find the original formula of Vick's NyQuil that worked so well. I am annoyed at pharmacy and drug companies that reformulated their products to a less effective ingredient. Pseudophendrine was banned because it is commonly used to make "Meth" (a waste of time and money, just my opinion). My recommendation: Work with your doctor to have available the medications for the various cold & flu symptoms. It's nice to be able to take an "all-in-one" dosage, but better not to over-medicate yourself and separate your meds to fit your symptom(s). And of course, keep your meds away from children (and that "Meth" user hidden in your basement).

1.0 out of 5 stars FALSE ADVERTISING, June 8, 2007
This review is from: Vicks NyQuil Multi-Symptom Cold/Flu Relief- Original Flavor 10 Fl Oz (Health and Beauty)
I purchased this product a few months ago because it said it had Pseudoephedrine in it. I can get the NEW product anywhere, but like the old Formula better, works better. So I ordered it, when IT came it was NOT what was advertised at all, it the NEW FORMULA. I will have to say the company did refund my money but assured me that they had contacted AMAZON to correct the ad, and that it would be pulled. I see that they are still FALSELY ADVERTISING this PRODUCT. SAME ON THEM AND AMAZON!!

This review is from: Vicks NyQuil Multi-Symptom Cold/Flu Relief- Original Flavor 10 Fl Oz (Health and Beauty)
This new version of NyQuil without the pseudoephedrine is completely worthless. I invariably wake up in the middle of the night totally unable to breath with a headache and feeling groogy. Taking this junk is a waste of time and money. Sleeping upright in a good recliner is far more effective than anything this stuff will do for me.

I just got off the phone with Vicks. To my horror they told me that the NyQuil "Original Recipe" with pseudoephedrine has been discontinued. Like other reviewers I've tried the new stuff and it simply doesn't work as well as the old. They said this was due to "low customer demand". This blows. Stupid meth heads!
