Very easy to use.

I would take my own temp and get back-to-back readings that varied THREE degrees!

I had a little trouble at first using this thermometer, but now I have no problems and I love it!! My 2 year old son is just getting over Strep throat and this thermometer made it so easy to take his temperature and let me tell you I used it A LOT. Before I bought this item I was reading the reviews and a lot of people were complaining how much they hated it. Then I read one review that basically said you will hate the thermometer if you don't learn how to use it correctly and that it really wasn't that difficult. And she was right. What I learned was try to make sure that you keep it flat on the forehead and do not push down on it, it will give you a false reading. Just glide over the skin. The night my son spiked a fever (before we knew he had Strep) I took his temperature a few times to make sure I got the same reading and when I brought him to the Pediatrics after hours emergency room my reading matched theirs!! Be patient and just keep testing it on yourself until you are comfortable using it, which is what I did, and you will say to yourself why didn't I get this sooner. It didn't take long to learn.

This thermometer works great! I tested it on my head three different times and the took an auxillary temp to compare- same temp every time! Both of my kids (2 and 4) were sick and I was able to take their temp while they slept!!! Accurate and it doesn't wake them up. The backlight screen is crucial. Very easy to use. Worth every penny for a thermometer that is accurate and unobtrusive.

Ok ok I have read your complaints as stated on these previous reviews.
Yes the enclosed instructions may be somewhat confusing. But PEOPLE! are we not level headed adults? Use your common sense here. You simply touch the sensor head to the forehead and gently slide it over a few inches to the side of the forehead (the side hairline) where the temporal artery is. And you get your reading. Easy sqeezy.

Ok ok this vicks product is NOT as accurate as the Exergen Temporal thermometer. But safety is the issue at hand here. Over these past years we have become accustomed to the fast efficient EAR thermometers. Yes they are abit more accurate because the measure closer to the actual inner temperature (right off of the Ear drum capillary supply).

But the covers which are required to protect the sensor are dangerous. Their dimentions 25x27 mm would unfortunately fit too nicely into a childs trachea. Of course we all try to keep these kinda things away from the children. But if one of these clear pliable plastic covers falls onto the carpet.....well the possibility is real.

If its accuracy that is an issue then you have to go with an oral (under the tongue) thermometer. HA - try getting that temp reading in a feverish cranky toddler.

These forehead thermometers give you a good enough accuracy to determine if the temperature is alittle elevated, ie; 99.6 or something to be concerned about and take action, ie; 101.6......... And there are not dangerous caps to worry about.

I received this item today and was sorely disappointed and quite frustrated by it for the following reasons:

1). Page 2 of the instruction booklet says to place it in the center of the forehead, push the button, and scan the forehead slowly from the center of the forehead to the temple. But wait a minute! Page 8 of the booklet says to start over the center of one eyebrow, move it to the tail of the eyebrow and then back to the center again. I called the 800 number on the booklet and asked why the discrepancy and which method was correct. They didn't know.

2). There are 3 adults in our household (my elderly mother, my husband and myself). Two of us typically run a sub-normal temp. This thermometer indicated that all of us were sitting at 99.8 degrees!!!! I took our temps using both methods described above .... no change; still 99.8. I then tested with a thermometer I know to be reliable and, sure enough, we were each at our regular normal temps (98.1, 98.2, and 98.6). Again, I asked the CSR at the 800 number why it should be so inaccurate and he assured me they test all of them before selling them. I asked him what they tested it on and in what type of clinical setting (as claimed on the package). He didn't know. To their credit, I'll say that they did offer to send me a replacement, but by that time I had lost all confidence in this product and so I told him I was simply going to return it to amazon for a refund.

THE BAD NEWS -- Thermometers, I learned, are NOT returnable items at amazon (per their website)!!!

THE GOOD NEWS -- I called Amazon.com customer service and was surprised and delighted at how pleasant and efficient they were. I've been shopping at amazon for 11 years now and this is the first time I've ever wanted to return anything. As soon as I told the CSR the problems I had encountered, she immediately said she would issue a full refund for the product!!

Thank you amazon!!!

Have a medically complex child who requires checking vital signs every shift. Need this type. Checked Consumer Report ratings and this was top-rated, tested against hospital equipment for accuracy and reliability. Yet, 3 our of 5 product ratings from purchase sites indicated dissatisfaction, one because the batteries were hard to find. IGNORE those ratings. The batteries are just AAA, found in any drugstore next to the AA batteries. One site indicated the thermometer weighs 4 pounds. More like 4 ounces. It is very simple to use and gives very clear results. This is the best thermometer we've ever had and I strongly encourage you to purchase it.
