One of the most effective tools you can have in working with individuals who face major change is having a clear and concise way to help them understand the change they are in the middle of. McKnight delivers! I have personally used this model in my coaching and it has helped individuals pause and reflect upon where they fall along the victim-survivor-navigator continuum. They will often gain insight on their own by being able to self-assess their behavior. After several uses, the victim-survivor-navigator framework becomes part of the coaching language. After all, part of the goal of coaching is to enable the client to catch their own victim or survivor behavior in the early stages so that sound navigator strategies can help them accomplish their goals. Victim-survivor-navigator is a simple model with deep implications. I've recommended this book to friends, colleagues, and clients.

5.0 out of 5 stars Accessible and helpful, January 8, 2010
This review is from: Victim, Survivor, or Navigator: Choosing a Response to Workplace Change (Paperback)
A readable and accessible description of how to handle change and stress, both in and out of the workplace. McKnight details different modes of dealing with change and stress, and gives practical advice on how to develop the optimum way of dealing with them--the way of the Navigator. I found the book both helpful and encouraging, and particularly timely in this period of economic uncertainty.

5.0 out of 5 stars Navigate your way to this book...., November 11, 2009
This review is from: Victim, Survivor, or Navigator: Choosing a Response to Workplace Change (Paperback)
This book is a great resource for anyone exploring his or her role in today's fast-moving fast-changing organizations.

McKnight's concepts and exercises illuminate how individuals respond to change in an engaging and thoughtful way. His approach is accessible and caring which helps readers "see" how their response to change impacts their own life as well as the lives of those around them. Ultimately, however, the power of this book lies in McKnight's ability to enable choice and support change. As an executive coach, I find this book very useful in helping clients move towards more personally sustainable and rewarding ways to contribute to our ever-changing society.

5.0 out of 5 stars Personal Change Made Possible, November 10, 2009
By
HWilliams (Philadelphia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Victim, Survivor, or Navigator: Choosing a Response to Workplace Change (Paperback)
I appreciated this book for its readability and thoughtful discussion of personal change management. It is well worth the read because it renews my faith and believe that "all change is personal." McKnight writes in a style that creates a sense of belief in the possibility of actually navigating one of the most serious of sources of distress for so many--today's workplace.

McKnight's writing is both unique and engaging. And, in engaging us, he helps us confront a significant issue as he tells the story of three choices we can make in response to workplace change. The idea that we all have a blend of victim, survivor and navigator in us will give those who have lost touch with hope encouragement and direction and those who have built some competence at personal change management some new things to consider.

Of all the books I've read on personal change mangagement this is by far the my personal favorite.

5.0 out of 5 stars Victim, Survivor, or Navigator -- a review, November 9, 2009
This review is from: Victim, Survivor, or Navigator: Choosing a Response to Workplace Change (Paperback)
This book is thoughtful, readable, wonderfully useful book. As an organizational development consultant, I found the book very valuable as organizations faced "permanent white water". As a therapist, i gain insights into working with my clients. Most of all, McKnight's book is a guide for my own personal journey. It's terrific!
