At first I was a little bit hesitant to review the latest Arjen album. Last year's Guilt Machine had not impressed me and, frankly, when I first heard this record I thought to myself "Arjen's trying to atone for the last one by making something typical."

I could not have been more wrong, and I'm glad that I waited on reviewing this particular record before giving it just an average score and regretting that later. In brief: yes, this is a very "Arjen" sounding record in the sense that it sounds like the type of Arjen you heard pre-The Human Equation. This IS, after all, "space metal." However, what Ajren's done with this apparent "step back" is more reflective of a complete recovery than any kind of nostalgia effort. It seems Arjen's finally managed to pull himself out of his depression and write some fun, proggy metal again. Fans of the original Star One should like this. Fans of Ayreon will like this. Arjen fans who did not like 01011001 and Guilt Machine will be brought back into the fold. Good work, Arjen!

My only complain with the album (and it's a small one) is some of the lyrics don't really reflect the source material as much as I'd like. The song based on Firefly/Serenity especially. It would have been cool for Arjen to pull out some Western music or something like that-- Oddly, the music to "Victims of the Modern Age" sounds like it'd do better to be a song about Firefly than "Earth that Was" does, but I digress. You can't loose with Victims of the Modern Age.

Is it the best album of the year? No. Is it an awesome album you should get anyway? Hell yes.

Awesome follow-up to Star One's earlier album Space Metal. Great core band, cool guest vocalists (including Russell Allen of Symphony X), and guitar solos by Gary Wehrkamp of Shadow Gallery. Led by Arjen Anthony Lucassen.

Lyrics continue the previous albums' connection to movies, but this time instead of space movies, they are "apocalyptic" films (check the title - victims of the modern age).

If you want to figure out the correlation of the lyrics (but not the music) to the films for yourself (he doesn't tell you, or even tell you that's what he's up to),then just go buy the album and don't keep reading.

Movies on which the song lyrics are based:
Down the Rabbit Hole / Digital Rain - The Matrix.
Earth That Was - Firefly (TV series) - had to look that up despite loving that show.
Victim of the Modern Age - A Clockwork Orange
Human See, Human Do - Planet of the Apes
24 Hours - Escape From New York
Cassandra Complex - 12 Monkeys - had to look it up (and what a Cassandra complex is)
It's Alive, She's Alive, We're Alive - Children of Men
It All Ends Here - Blade Runner

Summary - excellent prog rock, great guests and musicians, cool themes/topics.

The wait was well worth it. This the second studio album by Arjen Lucassen and The Star One cast is unbelieveable from the opening intro to the final chord. Sir Russell Allen, Damian Wilson, Floor Jansen, and Dan Swano all on vocals throughtout the album are in rare form and all 4 of them work together flawlessy, The music is technically heavier and more prgressive than the first Star One album "Space Metal", but is still a concept album. If you are looking for the perfect blend of Heavy, technical, progressive metal with a touch of Prog rock thrown in with 4 of the tops vocalists around then buy this for yourself, take the time to sit and listen to every song, and then you will discover why it is my #1 release of 2010, by the slimest of margins over tunsia's MYRATH.

While I preferred the original Space Metal album more than this one, this album definitely had enough good tracks that it did not disappoint me.

I buy pretty much anything that Russell Allen sings on, so having already owned the first Star One CD, and knowing how good it was, I knew as soon as I found out this one existed I had to get it. It's fabulous. I think maybe even better than the first one. I hope they decide to make a third CD. I've recommended this to several people.
