Victor Wooten is quite simply amazing.,
By Ronald P Crist (McKean, PA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Victor Wooten - Live at Bass Day '98 DVD (DVD)
As most bass players know, Victor has an incredible ability to play the most highly technical music. In this DVD, you get a chance to watch his hands while he's playing some of his most popular tunes. Victor has a "thump-off" with his brother Regi, who plays guitar. Victor also plays with his long time friend, Oteil Burbridge. This DVD also shows how cool of a guy Victor really is! He has such a pleasing and simple talent to answer questions and is surprisingly humble. I originally ordered this and thought it was only 80 minutes. That is the run-time of the VHS, but the DVD has a run-time of 140 minutes due to the extra interview on the DVD. This is possibly the most helpful to bass players because he really shows you some cool stuff and more techniques than his onstage performance. Another thing to note; the video quality is just what you'd expect from a proffessionally produced DVD and the audio is superb considering most of it is a live performance. Overall this is a must buy for anyone who enjoys or plays slap bass or musicianship of the highest degree!

Not only Entertaining but a great lesson video,
By Jacob (Florence SC) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Victor Wooten: Live at Bass Day 1998 [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I am a guitar player who enjoys watching great musicians, no matter the instrument. And as I do like Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, I decided to purchase this video for entertainment. And entertaining it is with Vic slapping up a torm on the bass. However the extra cool part is when Regi(Vics older brother) comes out on the guitar. Regi plays this beatiful song using a two-hand tapping technique unlike anything i have ever seen in before. I watched this video over and over just to learn that song Regi plays and to enjoy watching Vic lay down some serious Funk. This is a MUST-BUY for ANY bass player and a Vic fan. So go ahead and order it here, cause you wont find it anywhere else!

This video changed my life,

At the risk of sounding like an infomercial for Tae-Bo, I have to tell you that this video really did change my life ... well, at least my entire approach to music. Even if you don't play bass, buy the tape just to sit though the first twenty minutes in shock as Vic does stuff with a bass that just ain't supposed to be possible!Incredible chops! And, he is nice enough to give some excellent instructions on using his thumb and finger plucking technique.

I just got done watching this and WOW! I have had his Bass Extremes video for a few years and watched it a number of times and I thought it was excellent until I saw this (it is really good, but this just is much more about Victor Wooten and his technique and style). In a Q&A session Victor explains his unique technique over almost 10 minutes and your really get a feel for how he is doing it (and WOW!). This DVD is worth SO much more than I paid for it just for the Q&A session alone. Plus the things that he talks about in that are very relevant for all musicians, not just bass players. My opinion of Victor Wooten went up after watching this DVD, which I did not think was possible.

Victor Wooten is a master bass player, and this video captures all his great chops and musicality. He has raised the level of bass playing--and watching this video opened me up to new ideas in my playing. Well worth the money. Really entertaining, too.

I've been a follower of Victor for years - this video is a great introduction to the man and his monsterous technique. Get this video, but above all, try to see him live - all that talent AND he's a nice guy, too.....

Even Bootsy shivers...,
By Geoff Boccia (North Carolina) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Victor Wooten Live at Bass Day '98 DVD (Hardcover)
To speak of Victor Wooten in anything less than the language of genius, would be like refusing to acknowledge the dawn in spite of the light. Unfortunately (for us), he is one of those rare persons who, though EXCEPTIONALLY talented, is content to labor behind the scenes and allow his staggering abilities to be enjoyed, yet rarely be allowed to be directly congratulated. I have seen Bela Fleck in a number of venues and have always been mesmurized by Mr. Wooten, but was usually so overwhelmed by the intensity and craftmanship of the music, I hadn't time to truly deconstruct it. In this video, Mr. Wooten himself explains and demonstrates his astounding technique, passion, and feel, both for the bass as for music in general. Anyone who has had experience with jazz, rock, or, frankly, ANY music will be greatly rewarded by this video; and bass players in particular will be instructed and awed (mostly awed) by this legendary musician.

It's Wootabulous,

While many of us out there believe that Victor Wooten is a bass playing mechanism covered in a realistic neoprene epidermis, this DVD shows him to be quite the opposite. As passionate about life as he is about music, Victor Wooten truly is an amazing man. His human, yet methodical, approach to his playing technique allows him to breath life and space into phenominally constructed pieces of music. An absolute must for anyone who has listened to music. The "one on one" section with Vic certainly opens your eyes to a whole new world of playing possibilities, all while holding a steady groove with wicked melodies.I wore out my NTSC copy, and I'll try damn hard to do the same to the disc. PS> How's the shirt!! Three stars for that alone!!

Awesome insights into Vic's playing style & technique,

Before I purchased this dvd I had read reviews that said it was a great dvd but not to buy it if you were looking for vic to show you how to play like him. Having watched the dvd many many times since then I have to DISAGREE. Just watching this monster in action has given me more tricks & insights into how to do many of the thing he does. Taking the sound I once thought were magic and impossible and making me see that they are not impossible or magic just hard to do (ie require lots of practice). I highly recommend this dvd to anyone especially if you are like I am, not having any exposure to good bass players. We learn from each other so we need to watch each other play. I would say that just from watching Vic play (& practicing) my skill level has double over the past 6 months, and I've been playing for 8 years now.

This may be the best music DVD I've ever seen, and I've seen a lot of them. In the first minute of footage I knew it was worth every cent. Astonishing playing from Victor, his brother (who taught him starting at age 2...) and their friends! And it was obviously shot and edited by musicians; the camera was always exactly where I wanted it to be, not focused on someone's hairdo while a great riff was happening unseen. Best of all was the interview footage. Wooten is not only a phenonemal bass player but an excellent teacher; I can't believe how much I learned.
