Book Description

Stepney had tidal mills along the Thames by 1086 and in the Middle Ages it provided a land market for Londoners and courtiers. The growth of all the hamlets is traced to c.1700, besides economic development to c.1550 and their local government, religious life, and charities. Bethnal Green, in the north-west, a parish from 1743 and metropolitan borough from 1900, is described to the present day.

Editorial Reviews

Review

`The East End boasts such a rich history, it is inevitable that the odd myth and half truth is woven into the tapestry. This is why a new book, A History of the County of Middlesex Volume XI: Early Stepney with Bethnal Green is invaluable for setting the record straight ... The book examines a wide range of history - social, economic, political, religious and topographic - and doesn't over elaborate or indulge in wild speculation ... anyone with a passion for the East End is guaranteed to find a wealth of interesting gems.' Chris Taylor, East London Advertiser, 22nd Jun, 2000.

`the manorial pages contain a great deal of detailed and fascinating economic and social history ... an excellent and most interesting sample of the VCH genre.' --F.M.L Thompson, EHR, April 2001
