Left wanting more March 18, 2011
By Raven
This left leaning paper focuses on news from Victoria and around Vancouver Island. With such a strong local focus, it sometimes lags behind on national and international news stories. From time to time the writers drift off into opinion-land and forget that they are presenting news. However, there is no better paper covering this part of the world.

There is something that feels empty about the electronic version of this paper. Most of the major articles are there, but a lot of what makes this paper worth reading has been cut out from the e-version.

There are no pictures. This may be because I receive the international version on my kindle - I'm in Canada and not the USA. A great deal of what is available in the Kindle version of this paper is also available on the Victoria Times Colonist's website; including sections that are not on the Kindle version like the classifieds.

Given all this, one has to decide if the convenience of having this paper on their Kindle is worth the sacrifice. At the current price, I thought it best to pay a few pennies more and stick with the paper version for the time being.

During 14 day trial, got what I expected from Victoria Colonist content. Local news, local flavor (I live midwest USA but love British Columbia as vacation destination). For that I'd give it 3-4 stars for decent detailed local coverage. Negative stars for crummy tech problem though.

Half the time when navigating from the first page, it freezes/crashes the Kindle screen. Rebooting doesn't work until plugged in to recharge -- and this is true even when Kindle freshly charged. Making Kindle unusable for any purpose until following this ritual. And FORGET starting to read/navigate the Colonist after reboot, it just starts the freezing all over again.

Kindle reviewers of more prominent + widely circulated papers have gotten circular referrals between newspaper IT folks or Kindle troubleshooting (each saying other was source of issue) so I am not bothering, just unsubscribing.

Note that this crashing has not happened to me with 8-10 Kindle newspaper and magazine subscriptions since starting to use Kindle in mid-Dec. 2011 and it is now late Feb. 2012.

Pretty standard local "rag". Generally left of centre. Circulation figures as noted in he writeup are wrong - last time I checked it was around 60,000 which is a far cry from the noted 250,000.
