Incredibly gorgeous, August 8, 2010
This review is from: Victorian America (Audio CD)
This sort of sparse, moody music can be very hit or miss - you never know whether it's going to be haunting and beautiful, or sleepy and dull. Even White's previous album, while very good, isn't quite great. In fact, I almost didn't buy Victorian America. But now I'm in love with it and listen to it every day - sometimes more than once - and will continue to do so until I'm sick of it...it's just that good. Tracks like Victorian America, Country Life, The Ravens and Ghost of a Horse make this one of my favorite albums of the year. I thought that Marissa Nadler's Saga of Mayflower May was the best "dark folk" album, but this one is in the running now, and I'll certainly be looking forward to Emily Jane White's next album.
