Book Description

May 2003
Many of the designs are taken from original pieces of stitching while others are adapted from genuine Victorian magazines and pattern books. The wide range of delightful projects includes: decoupage Christmas baubles, beadwork earrings, a patchwork cot quilt, lacework cushions, a traditional Christening gown, an embroidered pillow case, a needlepoint footstool, shellwork Valentines, a quilting picture and boxes, paper-lace picture mounts and dried flower displays under glass. Each craft is described in complete step-by-step detail, providing easy projects for beginners and ideas to tempt the more experienced craftsperson. And, throughout, there are gorgeous colour photographs with antique settings and accessories, which evoke the Victorian atmosphere and show the great potential of the designs as family heirlooms and desirable gifts.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Drawn from Victorian originals, the 50-plus projects in this book provide a how-to survey of some favorite 19th-century crafts, a good introduction for anyone looking to try out a variety of skills before deciding which to pursue in depth. Designs range from needlework (quilting, needlepoint, cross-stitch, lacework, tassel making, beading) to papercraft (decoupage, quilling, papier-mâché) to floral and shell work, all accompanied by good color photos. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From Booklist

Green's projects display the classic floral motifs and the lacy, romantic, even froufrou ornamentation associated with design during Queen Victoria's reign. Craft aficionados enamored with Victorian style should delight in these patterns and step-by-step instructions for satin bags, beaded bottles, lace-embellished stationery, shell-encrusted picture frames, fancy gilded papier-m{ƒ}ach{‚}e objects, and various sewing projects that count among the featured home accessories. This is a colorfully illustrated book that will guide beginners in the creation of decorative objects reminiscent of a simpler time. Experienced handicrafters should find the more-detailed needlework motifs to be a pleasing challenge. Alice Joyce --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

3.0 out of 5 stars Introductory but interesting, June 27, 2007

This review is from: Victorian Crafts Revived (Paperback)
This book was not quite what I was hoping for, to be honest. I am a fairly accomplished craftswoman, and most of the projects seemed a little basic. The choices of crafts seemed at once limited and oddly varied. For example: there are no projects for crocheting, knitting, or tatting; but the author gives directions for gluing shells to a frame. You might consider this book, but I found Inside the Victorian Home very informative about many aspects of Victorian domestic life. In addition, Project Gutenburg has some interesting, free e-texts from the period that might be a better choice, such as Mrs. Beeton's Book of Needlework.
