Review

William Hesketh Lever, the first Lord Leverhulme, was one of the most extravagant collectors of Victorian and Edwardian art. He was also one of the most perceptive. This is the first detailed and scholarly catalog of the superb collection that is now housed in the Lady Lever Art Gallery. The catalog features two major groups of paintings: first, the late Pre-Raphaelite and classical revival works of Frederic Leighton, Edward Burne-Jones, J. W. Waterhouse and others; and second, a group of late Victorian and early 20th century works which Lever bought direct from their artists. An outstanding presentation of Victorian masterpieces! -- Midwest Book Review

This review is from: Victorian & Edwardian Paintings in the Lady Lever Art Gallery: British Artists Born After 1810 Excluding the Early Pre-Raphaelites (Victorian & ... Museums & Galleries on Merseyside, V. 1) (Hardcover)
I purchased this book primarily because I wanted to relive a very pleasant afternoon spent in 1977 when I first visited the Lady Lever Art Gallery in Port Sunlight, Chesire, Gr. Britain.

This book is beautifully illustrated with many black and white illustrations plus full page color photos -- though I must admit I wish there'd been more color used.

My only critique concerns the actual tone of the book: it is really aimed at the art scholar than the casual observer and thus it would have more appeal to someone who had studied the art in the Victorian & Edwardian eras.

All things said, I don't regret purchasing this book and it brought back many happy memories for me.
