5.0 out of 5 stars ...And you WON'T have to ask your friends to help you MOVE!!
Get out your deluxe collection of colored pencils and get ready to prepare the house of your dreams for your move-in day!

The details are here are wonderful -- it's just what I've come to expect from Dover. The Victorian House Coloring Book will keep you busy during a trip, a rainy day at home, or any time you need to reduce your stress level...

3.0 out of 5 stars This book is good for children
Disapointed to learn that this book does not show many victorian house designs. It just illustrated one victorian house and the many rooms inside the house. The illustrations are average made, it is a good children coloring book but not for adults looking for victorian style & decoration.I returned the book.

the pictures in this book are very very detailed and to be truthful a little hard on my 60 year old eyes but the appeal is in the book itself how it decribes each room of the house and what you would find there eg in the gazebo and flower garden it tells you the name of each flower and the meaning Victorians assigned to them what a shock for my grandchildren to see a bedroom without TV, video games, posters on the wall and wall to wall carpeting.

My daughter and I bought some Dover coloring books and a huge box of colored pencils for a recent plane trip. Coloring was a lot of fun and very relaxing; the images in these grown-up coloring books are detailed and lovely. I'll definitely buy more of these books for myself, for presents when people are in the hospital, birthday presents, etc.

5.0 out of 5 stars This was my first of many~love it., September 19, 2008

I got my first dover coloring book about 30 years ago and have been hooked. I now have a collection of about 20. They are kind of hard to find in retail and when you do the selection is poor.

I find coloring to be very relaxing when you are stressed. I also cannot just watch tv I like to be doing crochet or cross stitching, coloring.

These books are very well done as far as the drawings are concerned. They can be very intricate. Some are made more for children but many would be hard for a child under say 10yrs old to do and feel good about.

They are best done with colored pencils as you can get really good at shading and make them really pretty.

I highly recommend this and many others. I do own this specific book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun to color!, August 23, 2007

I'm an adult, and I still love to color - there I admitted it! That said, I purchased this coloring book for myself, and I enjoy it very much. It contains a Victorian house and the different rooms within. The parlor was so much fun to color! If you are a grown-up who enjoys coloring, give this book a try.

I just purchased these Dover COloring Books for my mother and she loves them. The detail is out of this world and the variety of colors you can use are only limited by your inagination. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great! Except..., January 4, 2012

The only problem I really had with this coloring book, is that there isn't more of it!

The drawings in this book are lovely, and in the information brief, but interesting. This is, I think I can say, one of my all time favorite coloring books from Dover so far! I love Victorian houses, and so this was just perfect for me!

However much I loved it, though, I have to be honest. This book had a problem: Out of 47 pages or so, you get only 19... yes, 19... illustrations, unless you are counting the flowery boarders around the text on the pages that don't have anything more than that, or any tiny misc. illustrations nobody else would count if they'd been the one doing it. So what you REALLY get in this book, is NOT 40 some pages of illustrations... but 19 pictures, and about as many pages with a floral boarder, around a page of text. Just so you know! This was a VERY disappointing flaw in this otherwise fantastic book (which I like very much anyway, but that's beside the point).

Also, people need to be sure they understand what they're getting, as I think others have pointed out. You're not getting a coloring book of Victorian houses. You are getting a coloring book featuring the interior of ONE SINGLE HOUSE. This may or may not be clear to some customers. I can't remember whether or not I knew it beforehand, but being someone as interested in the inside as the outside, it doesn't bother me in any case.

Finally, the question of detail/quality. I would say the quality of the illustrations is nice. The detail has been left just a bit on the unfinished side. So for instance, the furniture which would have been carved with, in some cases, stupendously intricate detail (which would have been a nightmare to color, actually), are in this book, largely without fine detail. With these nice illustrations, this is hardly a problem, unless you were hoping for photographic realism. (We might wish, but... probably not going to happen any time soon). The reason it's not a problem, is that most objects in the home would've had so many details in many cases, that if you leave half of them out, you've still got enough detail to work with, that it doesn't look bad. So this is not really going to be a problem for most of us. And if you're quite the artist yourself, I suppose you could even endeavor to fill in some of the missing details yourself, which is not a bad idea.

Over all, most people are not going to get that picky. But I'll admit... if you are obsessed with historical realism, or you've ever seen a Thomas Chippendale piece (of furniture), or an old Victorian furniture book... you've got me. You'll know what you're missing!

I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because while the pictures are lovely, I wish there had been more of them, and with 47 pages, to get only 19 "real" pictures (eg, not counting floral boarders around text that you technically can color), I did nevertheless feel a bit ripped off. Most people probably would feel ripped off! However it does depend on how you look at it.

In fairness to the author, whether it's deserved here or not (who only knows), if you were to color the flowered boarders around the text, the finished product, not as a typical coloring book, but as a little book about Victorian houses, would probably be pretty cute. The problem is, most of us don't care about that. We buy coloring books because we want pictures... not text with some illustrations sprinkled in every other page. In that one, single point, this book was rather disappointing.

But that didn't stop me from liking it probably a lot more than I should. Now that I've gotten over being "ripped off," (didn't take long with these pictures) I'm free to enjoy the 19 illustrations I really did get (or is it 18 and a half? One was practically a half-page...), for being as lovely as they are. If anything happened to mine, and I had money to spend, I'd probably get it again.

Just know what you're getting before you get it, and you'll probably be happy, too.

Sharpen your colored pencils! The drawings in this coloring book are perfect for bringing the artist out in all of us. After years of being a closet coloring fanatic I can finally share the obsession with friends without embarrassment. I think I've even converted a few people into enjoying this relaxing pass-time. The author gives us information and history on the usage of rooms in the Victorian home. However, the use of color is all in the control of one's mind. The Victorian House Coloring Book makes a great gift for someone who may be convalescing from an illness, too.
