Long Awaited, But Falls a Tad Short,

This review is from: A Victorian Master: Drawings by Frederic, Lord Leighton (Paperback)
In the entire Nineteenth Century, Only the drawings of Ingres, Gleyre, Bouguereau and possibly a few others stand beside those of Frederic Leighton. From his early, astonishingly detailed pencil drawings, to his later, rapturously beautiful studies on toned paper, Leighton stood head and shoulders above, in an age when expert drawing was a routine requirement of the professional artist.
So, you can imagine my excitement when I saw that an edition of these drawings was finally available. Unfortunately, the book falls just a tad short of perfection, if you are, like me, the kind of artist who benefits from seeing work reproduced full-size. This being an exhibition catalog, most of the drawings are presented as more-or-less postage stamp size images, although there are a handful of full-page photos, and they are delicious. I'm very happy to have bought this book for $35.00. I wouldn't pay much more for it, and I see it being offered for much, much more. If you can't find an affordable copy, go to the Leighton House Museum's excellent website [...]and feast your eyes. |
