This review is from: A Victorian Sunday (Audio CD)
If you're looking for a nice variety of hymn tunes played on Victorian era instruments, this is probably not the collection for you. If you're a collector of the different sounds those period instruments produce, you'll love this. While this CD does contain a variety of hymn tunes, what you get on many of the tracks is the same tune played over and over on a series of different instruments. It's interesting, but does not evoke the mood of a Victorian Sunday the title suggests.
It's worth having though, because the collection of lovingly restored instruments heard on this CD has been broken up so another such compilation will probaly never again be available. It's nice to have this resource to hear how these barrel organs, organettes and musical boxes so often referred to in literature, actually sounded. |
