Very light and very sharp!,
This review is from: Victorinox 3-Piece Paring Knife Set, Black Handles (Kitchen)
(9/11 Update): I find myself using the 'bird beak' parer almost daily. It is beginning to dull a bit. I know these knives were not designed to last a lifetime, but I would have paid a few cents more to have them shipped in cardboard blade protectors.(Original): I purchased these primarily because of the great reviews in 'Chef's Illustrated'. These are exceptionally sharp (and thin). I do not have a clue as to how long the sharp blades will last. However, I can assure the reader that these do not come close to having the 'heft' of Wusthof Classic,or Henckels Four Star. Having said that, it is ridiculous, based on the price, to try to compare them. 'Cooks Illustrated' gave a very nice review of these knives and there is no reason for me to debate that review. I am rating them 4-Stars simply because they are not in the class of Wusthof Classic, or Henckels Four Star.

These little knives are great. I was desparate for a sharp knife, so I took a chance. I would not give them up for twice the price.

These knives are EXTREMELY sharp. I have actually cut myself several times unknowingly and not notice until I wash my hands or get something in the cut. So use extreme caution when using and washing these knives. They seem to be well constructed and don't have oversized or uncomfortable handle. The 3-1/4-inch serrated paring knife is great for cutting most anything. The 3-1/4-inch straight parer is perfect for peeling and cutting apples, carrots, celery, and any other fruits and veggies. But 2-1/4-inch bird's beak parer is probably the best for peeling and segmenting broccoli and cauliflower. All in all these knives are well worth the price ($10) and I look forward to purchasing more Victorinox knives.

These knives are standard paring knives, nothing special. You can find nearly identical sets in your local kitchen-wares store. The metal seems cheap, not worth sharpening once they dull. They work well enough though, and they will probably last a couple years of daily use.The set includes a bird-beak knife for peeling rounded fruits and vegetables, a serated knife for tomatoes, and straigt blade for coring, dicing, slicing etc.

light and easy,

I use the paring (non-serrated) for EVERYTHING. I arrange flowers and this makes cleaner cuts than shears. It is so light and sharp. I also use it daily to cut fruits and veggies and sometimes even small pieces of meat when my other knives are dirty. I own about 5 of these and I'm never disappointed. They are not fancy looking or carry a super brand name like Wustoff, but they are good little knives.

Good blades, poor handles,

Based on the user reviews, I ordered these knives. The blades are, as advertised, sharp and well designed. The handles, however, are very thin and poorly shaped. After a few minutes of slicing strawberries, my hand began to cramp. The knives are very lightweight, which can be a problem because you have to provide all the cutting power yourself. This is one of the very few items I have ever returned to Amazon.

Sharp two years later, but watch the balance,

I cook regularly, usually using an assortment of good stamped Henckels knives and a terrific Farberware forged chef's knife, and rarely cut myself --- not more than once a year, if that. In three weeks of using these knives, I've cut myself three times; it's definitely possible that I would not have cut myself if I were paying better attention, but the knives do feel different in my hand from other knives and the association between these knives and cutting myself seems too strong for me to dismiss completely. That said, they work well, even on tomatoes, and I still enjoy using them although I pay super close attention now. UPDATE: I've had these knives now for almost 2 years and they are as sharp as the day that I bought them. The balance is different from other knives that I have, so just be careful.

Somebody send a crash cart and a sugar wafer to the reviewer who said "I have actually cut myself several times unknowingly and not notice [sic] until I wash my hands or get something in the cut"? Holy Numb, Batman! Are you kidding me?For your own good, please perform the following Amazon search: "diabetic neuropathy, living with." Buy the top three, particularly if it recommends 1 cc syringes. |
