I use the knife daily and for travel, and because I can be a bit of a minimalist with my gear, I found that I could pop the red plastic side covers off by using a flat head screwdriver (not really sure if the covers can be replaced afterwards though as I never wanted to). It may not be as pretty, but the knife still works perfectly and is a lot thinner. This does mean that you lose the little toothpick etc which sit in the covers, but the reduced size more than justifies that small sacrifice.
I really like that the bottle opener is also a can opener, and I cant understand why this combined function isn't more prevalent in other models. I love this knife, thank you Victorinox.
After all these years, I have just discovered a real practical use for the hook tool. The story may be a little amusing but I will tell it nonetheless. My employer buys the worst toilet paper, and has the worst toilet paper dispenser. It's very difficult to retrieve paper from the dispenser without tearing almost every sheet (it takes a range of weird techniques to overcome the issue, and I won't go into that). The dispenser takes a special key, and you guessed it, the hook works perfectly to open the dispenser, so now I can remove a complete toilet roll. Thanks again Victorinox, you saved my life. To me this has ultimately proven that it's not the tools that are limited, it's our imagination.
I like carrying my knives with pocket clips, so I added a Nite Ize eCLIPse Self Locking Clip to mine.
Being in a city I do not need all the tools swiss army knife has to offer and choose wisely ones that I might need. Having a victorinox climber plus that has three layers of blades I take the climber out of my pocket because it is a bit bulky. Victorinox Compact is a two layer 91mm knife with excellent scissors similar in size and function to Climber plus ("plus" means it has a pen, pin and tiny screwdriver in scales/corkscrew same as compact).
In a pocket carry two layer Swiss army knife is much better then slightly larger three layer knife. While some people chase a knife with as many features as possible it seems like they miss on what a good tool has to offer.
Adding more tools sacrifices the usability of existing tools.
For example using the main blade on a 3.5 inch wide SwissChamp is not anywhere as convenient as on Compact. But SwissChamp compensates that by being a better paper weight and excellent bragging subject.
The main blade is not locking and tiny bit shorter then 2.5 inches which is great areas where there is a 2.5 inch blade legal restrictions. Also well recognized shield and cross logo may play an important role for social acceptance a factor that many people seem to skip when choosing a knife.
To squeeze all the tools into a two layer knife victorinox combined the bottle opener with a can opener which works just as well for cap lifter and as a can opener it kinda punches through the can instead of cutting.Read more ›
