It is a classic Swiss Army Knife and well made.
Carlos
It provides enough useful tools for him to do small projects and have a pocket knife handy on a camping or fishing trip.
Matthew R. Smith
Not too thick and heavy to carry comfortably in a pocket, even in light clothing like shorts.

The Tinker model is one of Victorinox's most popular. With the Hiker model, we get their wonderful wood saw too.

I bought mine as a whittling knife. For this duty, the first step is to remove the keyring and ground or file the keyring nub flush with the rest of the knife body. With the saw, I can harvest the branch and cut grooves for gripping areas. I filed the small blade into kind of a Wharnecliffe pattern and sharpened the point of the tip, to let it get into tight areas easier.

One thing worth noting about the Hiker is that although it is three layers thick, the saw is a very thin layer. So it is nowhere near as thick as a Spartan Lite, for example, whose flashlight/phillips layer is a LOT thicker than the saw. The Super Tinker model replaces the saw of the Hiker with a scissors, so that's a more suitable knife for indoor use.

The usual Victorinox build quality is here. Perfect fit, finish, and attention to detail.

- The can opener works wonderfully. Almost as well as a dedicated hand-crank unit in your kitchen. The small screwdriver tip on the can opener also doubles as a make-shift inline #2 Phillips driver. However, it is easy to close this up on your fingers when using the screwdriver, so be care there.

- The bottle opener also works well, but the most useful part of this implement is certainly the flat head driver. I use that driver as often as I do the knife blade. The wire stripper only works if you cut a ring around the wire through the insulation first. If you do that, this works really well too.

- The small blade is better for precision work. Some folks save it as a back-up that is always sharp. Others use this as the main blade, and save the large one for food prep. It's up to you.

This knife is awesome! Great toolbox in a easily pocketable configuration. The saw is simply the best on any multitool. The blades come sharp, are easily sharpened, and hold thier edge very well. This is a great whittlers knife; I use it around the farm too. Pair this SAK with a Victorinox Rambler and Leatherman Skeletool and you have a pocket toolbox that will tackle just about any job!

For new scouts I usually recommend the Tinker or for a little less money, the Recruit. I bought a Tinker many years ago when I was a Scout and both of my Scout sons have the Tinker. I recently upgraded to the non-serrated Trekker. The Hiker adds a saw to the TInker's set of tools. Why on earth they have corkscrews on the Camper and lots of other Swiss Army Knives has always puzzled me... even the Victorinox with the Offical Boy Scout logo (the Camper) has a corkscrew... what on earth are Boy Scouts going to do with a corkscrew? ...but I digress. Victorinox still hade THE BEST can opener design of and of the "Swiss Army Knives", I've had them all and they are all frustrating once you learn to use the Victorinox properly, and it leaves a much cleaner cut. If you just want a blade without all of the tools, get a nice locking blade knife and put a US Army P-38 can opener on your keychain. I bought this knife as a prize for one of my Scouts who just spend a week with this knife at scout camp, and it's great. The saw works well on wood about 1" in diameter, which is good for a cooking fire or cutting a pole for your shelter. If you are skilled with a hatchet, and it's a good hatchet, then the saw might not be all that importat for you - and for a cooking fire you can break most wood by hand, but I don't always want the weight of my hatchet. It would be cool if they put a slot on the saw for use as a fish hook removal tool.

These Victorinox knifes are the best. I alsways carry one. WHy? they are rugged and take a lot of abuse, blades are sharp and stay sharp for a long time. The tools on the knife are also rugged and do the job. this knife means business and I will always own one.

Many Vic models let you design the knife with the tools you want or need too.

Swiss craftsmanship at a decent price - what more can one ask? Bought several of these Hiker Knives to put in each vehicle, backpacks and Christmas stockings. Now we can pull slivers and pick our teeth anywhere - can I get a heck yeah?

The hiker is a great tool. I needed a small knife with a saw to add to my small whittling knife collection. This is a perfect toll for this job.

Perfect knife. Not too thick and heavy to carry comfortably in a pocket, even in light clothing like shorts. It has all the practical pieces, especially the screwdriver. And it has the saw, which is the one thing you want if you ever get stuck somewhere, far more than you'll need scissors and a corkscrew. Before, to get the saw, I always ended up with a fatter knife. I'm glad I finally found this model.
