Product Description

Victorinox Swiss Army – History

Master Cutler Karl Elsener opened a cutlery shop in Ibach, Switzerland in 1884. Seven years later, in 1891, Karl supplied the Swiss Army with its standard issue Soldier’s Knife. After the death of his mother in 1909, Karl Elsener introduced the brand name Victoria and the iconic Cross and Shield emblem is registered as a trademark. With the advent of stainless steel, Karl Elsener coined the company’s name, Victorinox, by combining his mother’s name with “inox”, an abbreviation of the French word for rust-resistant steel, “inoxydable”. After World War II, the “Original Swiss Army Knife” began its successful progression around the world and enjoyed exceptional popularity. In 1989, Victorinox entered the timepiece business in the United States under the brand name “Swiss Army”. Ten years later, Victorinox joined the Travel Gear market, partnering with TRG Group in St. Louis. And in 2001, Victorinox fashion was introduced in the US to further capture the brand’s essence of practical luxury. In 2002, in order to promote global unity, the Victorinox Swiss Army timepiece brand was launched internationally. In 2007, Victorinox set up Victorinox Swiss Army Fragrance AG, and in 2009 Victorinox Swiss Unlimited was launched. 2014 marks Victorinox Swiss Army’s 130th anniversary, and each Victorinox Swiss Army product embodies the spirit of the Legendary Original Swiss Army Knife, a universal symbol of Functionality, Innovation, Quality and Iconic Design.

It's my second watch, beside NOS Omega Speedmaster Mark 4,5, which I wear only in some special occasions as it is my grail watch.

PROS: It's water resistant up to 500m or 1640ft. The watch band is heavy duty. The glowing points and bezel marker are bright and easy to distinguish. The bezel is easy to turn with dive gloves. Date is magnified INSIDE, not outside on the crystal (like Rolex watches).

CONS: Watch band STIFF! Need to break watch band in for 1 week on wrist. Watch band replacement is $100. The watch is heavy, so don't drop it! Newer model has "Victorinox Swiss Army" written on face instead of only "Swiss Army"

*Bought it for $178 from Nordstrom Rack in Austin, TX on 26Nov10.

UPDATE (22Oct11): Took the watch on its first dive to 110ft. Watch face was bright, with a charge from the dive light.

UPDATE (19Dec11): The second hand moves in groups of 4 or 5 seconds. A rep at Victorinox in Boston (Copley Place) said this is normal when the battery is low. Need to service at Victorinox H.Q. in Monroe, CT.

UPDATE (30Jan12): Had the watch serviced for battery replacement at Victorinox factory store in Monroe, CT. The battery was changed for $20 and was returned in a small burgundy Victorinox embroidered felt bag with pull-strings. The rep was courteous, very knowledgeable, and followed up with a phone call when completed.

UPDATE (14Jul14): Went to the Victorinox factory store in Monroe, CT for battery replacement (was ticking every 5 seconds). Was emailed with an estimate of $115 for a battery and a "quarts movement basic 3 hand". I called for further explanation. I was told that the battery wasn't the problem; my movement was failing and was losing time. I okay-ed the repair/charges. I was notified via email that the repair was completed and was being held at the factory store in Monroe, CT.

Good watch of sport appearance, good size, and color. It's heavy wight and looks exactly as in the picture. The stripe is of good quality and thick. Some times my wrist is in pain due to the weight. Ladies always have some compliments when I use it.

I'm very happy with it,accurate, glowing points instead numbers beautiful design, heavy and strong, it's a very tough watch, heavy but that is OK with me I dont like the light watches like titanium ones because I feel there are plastic made and I'm not wearing it
water resistant 500 mts, Do you need more? Sapphire Crystal, Stainless steel case....

A Word that I heard from a Tag Heuer Service Center member: "There is NO difference in material or quality between VICTORINOX DIVE MASTER 500 Series and TAG HEUER LINK at all! the Difference in price is just because the Advertising Budget" Tag pays millions every year to well known celebrities aka Tag Heuer Ambassadors, which reflects on your bill, Tag is a good watch no doubt, but VICTORINOX is still On Top along with Tag, better to mention that VICTORINOX is Clint Eastwood's favorite!
I picked this watch at amazon.com and upgraded the rubber band with the original stainless steel bracelet and it looks PERFECT in the bracelet! I get tons of compliments on it with the stainless steel bracelet for it looks just like the BREITLING from distance, but more beautiful!
This is a really solid and great watch, buy it before it's sold out!
