Victorinox Swiss Army – History

Master Cutler Karl Elsener opened a cutlery shop in Ibach, Switzerland in 1884. Seven years later, in 1891, Karl supplied the Swiss Army with its standard issue Soldier’s Knife. After the death of his mother in 1909, Karl Elsener introduced the brand name Victoria and the iconic Cross and Shield emblem is registered as a trademark. With the advent of stainless steel, Karl Elsener coined the company’s name, Victorinox, by combining his mother’s name with “inox”, an abbreviation of the French word for rust-resistant steel, “inoxydable”. After World War II, the “Original Swiss Army Knife” began its successful progression around the world and enjoyed exceptional popularity. In 1989, Victorinox entered the timepiece business in the United States under the brand name “Swiss Army”. Ten years later, Victorinox joined the Travel Gear market, partnering with TRG Group in St. Louis. And in 2001, Victorinox fashion was introduced in the US to further capture the brand’s essence of practical luxury. In 2002, in order to promote global unity, the Victorinox Swiss Army timepiece brand was launched internationally. In 2007, Victorinox set up Victorinox Swiss Army Fragrance AG, and in 2009 Victorinox Swiss Unlimited was launched. 2014 marks Victorinox Swiss Army’s 130th anniversary, and each Victorinox Swiss Army product embodies the spirit of the Legendary Original Swiss Army Knife, a universal symbol of Functionality, Innovation, Quality and Iconic Design.

First, I must admit to specifying this watch on my Wish List and getting it as a Christmas gift from my lovely wife. I had been a big fan of ESQs but one recently let me down so i thought about going upscale (over $1K). This watch is stunning in person and an incredible value!

Let's start with design. It has the more modern large face diameter but not crazy big like some other brands, good thickness but not too big to wear under dress shirt sleeves, and a wide metal band with 3-across link design that gives it an overall pleasing bold look. I have average size arms and hands and was worried that these larger watches would look odd on me, but quite the opposite is true and it looks great on the arm. Yes, it is extremely close in appearance to the Rolex, and with well executed stainless finishes and graphics many will think it is a Rolex. This is a daily watch for me to be worn with dress shirts/suits, as well as casual. The weight of the watch also feels substantial and nice.

Function: It has the classic 3-dial chronograph with stopwatch functions. The knurled ring dial around the watch is easy to turn and rewards you with solid firm mechanical clicks, useful for things like tracking time while grilling. For international travelers, you can adjust the time by hour-hand only which is a time saver for big time zone shifts. It also helps with date changes to the proper am or pm setting. The sapphire crystal is supposed to give added durability and there's no reason to doubt this. Other nice touches like glow-in-the-dark hands help give it nice function.

All in all, as a guy in his mid-40s I love the complete bold/rugged look and quality feel of this watch, ...and what an outstanding value. It has exceeded my expectations in all areas and I am enjoying wearing it!

I recently purchased the Victorinox Swiss Army Men's 241432 Maverick GS Black Dial Watch for a great price of about 58% of retail price. I took it to a local jeweler and had them size the band to fit ($15). The watch looks a lot more expensive and compares in looks to other more expensive watches i.e. Rolex & Tag Heuer. I am very pleased with my purchase.

This is my 5th Victorinox watch from Amazon, and I have been most pleased with all of them. This is a rugged, well-made watch that exemplifies a good chronograph. Very easy to read, even in poor lighting conditions, luminous hands, and extremely accurate. The rotating bezel is solid, and well-defined. It also has a luminous dot at the 12 o'clock position, making it quick to gauge the time in total darkness. I highly recommend it.

Very nice watch. Overall quality is superb. Good weight and nice clasp. The band has the wetsuit extension at the clasp (not that I would recommend going diving with this.) Black face on this model really shows up with silver dial bands. 43mm size is perfect size. I've gotten many comments about the appearance of this watch. Very happy with this purchase. Awesome!

Jomashop sold me a defective watch. Okay, to be fair, I ordered this watch a long time ago. It was a very nice watch. I used this as my weekend watch because I have a very expensive watch that I use for business casual dress. Not long after I purchased the watch the skinny white hand that shows seconds when you are using the stop watch feature froze between the 7 and 8. This troubled me, of course, but I didn't have time to deal with immediately so I set it aside for a few weeks and wore my other watch. When I finally had time to deal with my watch, the entire watch had stopped. I was relieved. I assumed this meant the battery was bad. You never know how long these watches from internet store fronts have sat on the shelf. Frustrated I had to find time to change a battery on a watch that wasn't very old, again, I set it aside. It sat gathering dust in my closet for over a year before I finally got around to taking in. Warning: cost me $55 just to have the battery changed. I got the watch back and it ran perfectly. I never thought another thing about it. I wore it quite infrequently for a long time. Then one day I needed to the use the stop watch feature. Once again the second hand froze on between the 7-8. I couldn't believe it!! The watch was keeping time fine but the stop watch feature was frozen. Then within weeks it was dead again. I now believe the stop watch feature is defective and depletes the battery. I contact Jomashop, but they advised that I had waited to long to report the defective watch. In all fairness to Jomashop, I had waited too long to contact them. But I had waited too long because I simply didn't realize it was defective. I misjudged the problem and now I'm left with a watch that was defective from the very beginning.Read more ›

Its a good looking watch. I just have a couple issues with it:

    - The dial is hard to read at night time because the numbers are silver and not white as they appear on the picture.
    - In the dark is really hard to read the time as only the hands and the marker on the bezel are luminous.
