Product Description

The Victorinox Swiss Army Story

In 1884, Karl Elsener opened a cutlery workshop in Ibach-Schwyz, Switzerland with the support of his mother Victoria. Just like that, Victorinox Swiss Army was born.

In 1891, Elsener and his coworkers deliver knives for soldiers in the Swiss Army for the first time. Six years later, the company legally protected the names Swiss "Officer's" and "Sport Knife." The model later became known as the Original Swiss Army Knife.

Following Elsener's mother's death in 1909, the company incorporated her name into the brand and unveiled its well-known cross and shield emblem. Elsener arrived at the name Victorinox by combining the name Victoria with "inox," an abbreviation of the French word for rust-resistant steel, "inoxydable."

In 1989, Victorinox officially entered the timepiece business in the United States under the brand name Swiss Army. In 1999, Victorinox partners with the American TRG Group in St. Louis and enters into the international travel gear market. In 2001, the company launched a fashion line in the U.S. with a collection that delivers technical and tailored styling capturing the brand’s essence of practical luxury. If that wasn't enough, in 2007 Victorinox sets up Victorinox Swiss Army Fragrance AG, and in 2009 Victorinox Swiss Unlimited was launched.

Victorinox Swiss Army treasures its heritage, the future is equally inspiring. Innovation is at the heart of each Victorinox product it introduces, with exciting technical advancement throughout all its product categories.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Watch - Steep learning curve, March 26, 2010
This review is from: Victorinox Swiss Army Men's 24469 Hunter Collection Analog/Digital Chronograph Stainless Steel Watch (Watch)
This is a very high tech watch with exceedingly high build quality and ruggedness. It is heavy. The design is a hybrid analog/digital with the digital display providing a second time zone, day/date/week of year, alarm, timer, and counter. Unlike most hybrids, this is an analog watch first and foremost and a digital watch second. In fact, the digital display is discrete in appearance and can be completely turned off, or reduced to just the date to make for a sleeker non-digital look. One unique feature is that the watch can be placed in hybernation mode to extend battery life. I have both the stainless steel and rubber watch bands. The rubber band is more comfortable on my skinny wrist, but the stainless band is great looking. This is an expensive looking watch which gets compliments. I also collect swiss time pieces, but this is one watch that won't get knocked off in China. It is simply too high tech and unique in design. The only downside to this watch is that making adjustments requires the manual. There is nothing intuitive about setting this watch. If you're willing to keep the manual handy and refer to it whenever you need to set the watch, I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great watch, October 25, 2011
This review is from: Victorinox Swiss Army Men's 24469 Hunter Collection Analog/Digital Chronograph Stainless Steel Watch (Watch)
I purchased this watch in Switzerland 10 years ago to replace my Rolex Oyster. It is a fantastic watch with many outstanding features: the contoured case is much more comfortable to wear than a Rolex and doesn't snag on your shirt cuffs like virtually all of the large diver/driver style watches on the market. While it's many features may require occasional referral to the manual, the one I use the most, changing time zones when I travel is the easiest I've ever used and it automatically adjusts the time, to the second, to compensate for the time you've used to change the time zone. I've gone through two 100% "rubber" wrist straps - both failed at the clasp, and one ss+rubber strap which hasn't failed completely and have been using the solid ss wrist band for the last 5-6 years - easier to use than the Rolex and again very comfortable for this type of band. The crystal is outstanding - I've worn the watch every day since I purchased it, with the normal banging around, and there is not a visible scratch on it. Battery life is about 4 years (I'm on my third). IMO this watch is worth every bit of its cost.

2.0 out of 5 stars Overcomplicated and Too Heavy, May 5, 2010
By
This review is from: Victorinox Swiss Army Men's 24469 Hunter Collection Analog/Digital Chronograph Stainless Steel Watch (Watch)
This watch is unnecessarily technical to operate as well as unusually HEAVY. I bought it purely for aesthetics but have found it to be an overload of technology that is very difficult to operate. The manual was minimally helpful in understanding the features but falls FAR short of a user friendly resource for learning all the functionality. Plus, the controls are extremely touchy and the settings change by accident several times throughout a given day.

If you were like me and like the aesthetic but neither want nor need the technical aspects of a digital watch, buy something else.
