3.0 out of 5 stars I dont like the locking mechanism
I bought this item because I love the Trekker model but it was missing the sizzors which I find very useful. The Outrider is supposed to be like a Trekker with the addition of the sizzors. However, there is no comparison. The Trekker has a much more solid blade locking mechanism (liner lock) and feels very secure in comparison to the Outrider which has a flimsy button...

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredibly useful, September 17, 2009

I own a variety of multitools and Swiss Army Knives (sorry, I'm a gadget freak), and this is a perennial favorite. The Outrider is equipped with a fine set of tools, including the always-useful scissors and a toothy saw for hacking off troublesome small tree branches and such. Since the cutting blade is non-serrated, it's easy to sharpen. Swiss Army Knives don't use the most expensive stainless steel, but the people at Victorinox have chosen this alloy carefully and with regular maintenance the blade can be kept razor-sharp.

I also have come to prefer a knife with a locking mechanism on the cutting blade; it's a terrific safety feature. Despite what some people might claim, the blade locking mechanism on the Outrider is reliable and easy to use.

The knife is larger than the standard Swiss knives that many people carry, but it's contoured nicely and fits snugly in a pocket. It also includes the standard toothpick and tweezers; if these are misplaced you can buy replacements from Victorinox.

People should select their particular knife model based upon its size and the selection of tools that best fits their needs. The Outrider has proven an excellent choice for me, and perhaps for you, too.

However, there is no comparison. The Trekker has a much more solid blade locking mechanism (liner lock) and feels very secure in comparison to the Outrider which has a flimsy button release locking mechanism. The Outrider just does not have that nice solid lock up feel that the Trekker has. Too bad. I returned this knife.

5.0 out of 5 stars Big, but not too big., April 25, 2010

After carrying a Vic Champion Plus or SwissChamp for a while I was interested in getting back into the Vic 111 mm stable of knives. I'm a big man, 6'3" tall, 275#'s, I like a big knife with as many functions as possible, that is without a knife that's too big and heavy and that pulls my pants down when worn in a pouch on my belt. My major requirement in a SAK are three things, scissors, in line Phillips driver, and a corkscrew to place my mini driver for my glasses. In the VIc Outrider I get all those plus a punch awl, can opener/small flathead, large flathead/cap lifter/wire crimper and a true, usable saw as a bonus, all in a compact package not anywhere too heavy or bulky for EDC. Buy this knife if you value what I do in a multi tool, carry a pair of dedicated pliers if you feel you must as no maker provides an adequate all in one package IMHO.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Knife at a Competitive Price!, February 28, 2010

Love the knife! Perfect tool when out on the lake or trail. Would also be great for use as a supplement to a fixed blade when minimalist backpacking/extended-stay hunting. The new design is comfortable in the hand whether making fuzz-sticks or cleaning fish. Despite what some have said, the lock is solid. My only complaint is that I would prefer the main blade to have been positioned in the center of the tool. For example, rather than Knife, tool, tool, tool, I would have preferred tool, tool, Knife, tool, tool.

This knife has all of the features I was looking for without too many extraneous ones. I really like that the big knife blade locks. You don't have to worry about it closing on your hand while you are using it. The scissors are also very useful.

One downside to this knife is the weight. It is made very well, but is fairly heavy for its size. Unfortunately it is too heavy for me to carry in my pocket.

I already have two Leatherman tools I carry daily, a Wave and a Squirt ES4. The Wave is a great tool, but it weighs close to a pound. I have several other Swiss Army knives, but none of them lockblades. I wanted something I could carry on days where I wasn't ready to have something that bulky on my belt, but still wanted to have a good tool available, and the Outrider seemed to be just the thing, after looking at several models of Leatherman, Wenger and Victorinox. The lockblade, large scissors, long Phillips screwdriver and saw, as well as being able to add the mini-screwdriver that threads onto the corkscrew made it perfect for my needs. Sure, the lockblade mechanism feels just a tad flimsy, but this isn't a brute force tool anyways, you shouldn't be looking at a Swiss Army Knife in that case.

Anyways, it has been very useful so far and the scissors are very sharp and strong. I highly recommend it for anyone looking at lockblade multi-tools that don't pull your pants down... :)

This is a great all around knife/multi tool. It might be some-what to large to carry in your pocket every day. But it is perfect for carrying in my glove comartment. Nice assortment of tools. Nice build quality.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great jacknife, sturdy, versatile, reliable, August 26, 2008

Excellent knife. I debated a variety of options but this has the following:

* Locking large blade
* Can opener, bottle opener, corkscrew
* Note that the small and large flathead screwdrivers are on the can and bottle openers
* Tweasers and toothpick
* Scissors
* Saw
* Small Philips head screwdriver
* Reamer

Only thing that was missing was the corkscrew attachment that reverses into a small flathead screwdriver. Also it would have been nice to have a shorter blade as well, e.g., as a paring knife.

So this is a sturdy knife. It fits well in the hand (I have medium-sized hand for a man. It has basically three sections, with the middle being a double section to fit the saw and the scissors side-by-side.

This is highly versatile pocketknife, if you only want a single knife (which was my goal). You can work on computers with it, do cleanup in the restroom, useful in the kitchen, and sturdy enough for light camping.

Sturdy, versatile, reliable.

This knife does it all, from sawing wood to cutting up dinner to removing a splinter to cutting out coupons from the Sunday newspaper.
Great camping/hiking knife.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great pocket knife, December 13, 2011

Great price for a good product. fit nicely in my front pocket. The blade is sharp enough for cutting fruits and cheese. Scissor is small yet sharp enough for thin cardboard or any small packages. Can opener is great. So far no complain. Will update this review if I come across any problem. Wish it has a small LED on it.
