5.0 out of 5 stars Great selection of features in a small package/computer work

I use this often and missed it a lot when I lost it (after having the previous model for years). I like the newer model. I work in IT and co-workers tend to make tools disappear, so this seemed like something handy to have.

The quality of the included tools is great, and once you get used to carrying it around, you almost feel lost without it. It really does seem to have just about everything a geek would need. Oddly enough, the DIP switch tool is actually a ballpoint pen. Personally, I think that's more useful, but keep that in mind if you care about keeping your DIP switches pristine.

That all said, it's much thicker than it appears in the picture -- maybe about an inch or so. It's also heavier than an iPod, which takes some getting used to. The Ruby finish looks great when you first get it, but it scratches very easily.

If you have a need for a lot of the tools, this is great to have. But if you're at all concerned with size and weight, you might want to pass on this.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Make sure to rotate the plastic bit holder back into place IMMEDIATELY after selecting another bit!!! (so stuff doesn't fall out accidentally). I'd recommend this item to others.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best of the Best, March 25, 2007

I'm on my second Swiss Army CyberTool 34 and really love it. The venerable Swiss Army Knife series has always produced outstanding products and this one, in my opinion, is the very best and I'll tell you why.

I travel about 8 months out of the year and normally carry my laptop with me. I've found the CyberTool so useful that I wore my first one out. I use it all the time for minor computer issues and also to remove splinters, dig out warts, repair sun glasses, tighten Scuba Gear, write post cards, cut onions, trim fingernails, remove stitches, clean coffee grinders, and probably more I've forgotten about.

Plus it looks sexy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Father's Day Gift I Ever Received, June 14, 2007
This review is from: Victorinox Swiss Army CyberTool 34 Multitool Knife (Sports)
I got a CyberTool Swiss Army Knife two years ago (or maybe three) for Father's Day and despite it being wide and heavy, rarely a day goes by that it isn't weighting down my pocket. It is just too useful to leave behind. I've worked on computers, installed a car stereo, trimmed hair, signed restaurant checks, removed splinters, cut out articles, opened wine, bent wires, repaired eyeglasses, replaced electrical outlets, and occasionally even used it as a traditional pocket knife. I'm sure I'm leaving out some of the other uses as well.

Great item and a great gift idea!

4.0 out of 5 stars Quality all-purpose multi-tool, February 2, 2007
This review is from: Victorinox Swiss Army CyberTool 34 Multitool Knife (Sports)
Before I got the Cybertool Swiss Army Knife for Christmas, I already owned two other Swiss Army pocket knives: one that's now sold as the Wenger Canyon Genuine Swiss Army Knife, and the other which was essentially the same, but from the late '80s with the BSA logo, from my early days as a scout -- both of which are small and simple knives. I've used that last knife for almost 20 years now, and with proper care it has maintained practically a perfect edge and smooth opening and closure. I love it and it's the reason I still go back to Swiss Army knives: with proven quality, I don't have any real need to try out other brands.

I've never been one for the big multi-tool knives however, but I must say that I love the Cybertool. Of course it has all of the standards, but the real attraction is in the addition of the screwdriver with 7 interchangeable bits (1 regular, and 3 double-sided). I do a lot of pc hardware work and honestly don't usually need more than one of the phillips-head screwdriver bits, but the rest, even the star bits, come in handy if you've ever encountered security screws, which seems to happen more and more frequently. For both the screwdriver and the pliers, the construction is solid and the alignment is perfect. All of the tools open and close solidly, and the removable items (tweezers, toothpick, and ballpoint pen) are held firmly in place. It was always the size of the larger multi-tool knives that turned me off, but this one is just right. Big enough to house everything I need, but not so large that it feels heavy and cumbersome in my pocket.

I gave the knife a rating of "4" for three simple reasons. The first one is the translucent body. Maybe I'm just a traditionalist here, but I would have preferred the choice of solid red or bare metal; I just don't like the translucent plastic. But that alone wouldn't have been enough to warrant a lower rating. A bigger issue is the wire snip on the pliers; a smart addition to the knife, but so small it can be difficult to use. The leverage is there to make the cut, but the depth isn't -- I have to do two cuts, even with 18 gauge wire. And I only bring this up because there is room to make it slightly deeper and wider. The other problem is the placement of the hook. Instead of opening from the end of the knife on the top, it opens from the bottom with the hinge in the middle. Placement on the top of the knife would have allowed it to be twice as long as it is, while giving greater mobility, and hence, functionality. Had its placement been swapped with the can and bottle openers I could see myself using it more often.

Overall, a great knife, and one I'd not hesitate to recommend to other hobbyists. While it's specifically marketed as a "cyber" tool, it would also be helpful as general tool for anyone working with small parts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love this knife, December 6, 2006

(VINE VOICE)
I've had several "fat" Swiss Army knives over the years, and this is my favorite. The highlights for me were three things: The screwdriver socket set, the pliers, and the pull out pen. (I also like the option to get this knife in blue. I have been so used to the red ones I was glad for the change).

First, regarding the screwdriver socket pieces, they are pretty well made, with a tiny spring loaded bearing in the middle. This means that when you plug the pieces into the socket they sort of lock in, and won't drop out when you are trying to use them. The 4 socket bits are double sided (with a separate driver head on each side). They contains 3 different sizes of Phillips heads, 3 hex heads (weird, but useful on the off chance you need them), 1 octagon head (basically a "blank"), and 1 regular screwdriver head. (Keep in mind that the knife set also contains the standard screwdriver options as well, so that explains why only 1 socket is a regular screwdriver. You also get a tiny screwdriver which is stored within the corkscrew, and a larger one that flips out from the back of the knife).

Second, is the cool set of pliers. They are relatively thick, so can actually be of some use, and most Swiss Army knives don't come with this feature.

Third, is the tiny pen which you can separate from the knife entirely. I keep this knife in my car, and on many occasions I don't have a pen lying around, and I grab this one to help me out.

Finally, I am quite pleased that this set did not contain a USB drive like some of the other new Swiss Army knives. This might be initially entertaining, but in 6 months it is going to be so outdated that you are going to wish you had a plain old knife! (Imagining trying to give this knife to your kid in 10 years. Dad, what is this weird thing on the knife?)

Great Stocking Stuffer!

5.0 out of 5 stars A toolbox in your pocket!, May 21, 2006
I've carried this pocketknife for more than five years now, so I think I can give it a fair review.

My cybertool has the blue handles, and when I bought it, was the first and only model offered; there was no Cybertool 29 or 41, et al, as I've noticed is currently available.

Initially, I was looking for a way to lighten up the electronics repair toolkit I carried at work, and I came across this pocketknife. Well, this little thing immediately replaced half the tools I carried, and had other features I didn't currently have.

Well, this cybertool has held up tremendously well over the years. All of the tools are stiff to bring out, and can be pulled out to a 90 degree angle or all out, although they don't lock in place, they stay relatively well in position.

Both blades (small & large) are still very sharp, despite a lot of use and abuse.

The bits all still work, I've only replaced the flat head after a friend bent it out of shape adjusting a rifle scope.

Scissors, pliers, bottle and can openers, even the awl have come into use and abuse over the years, all still work and perform flawlessly. The can opener works better and faster than a P38, which surpised me.

I've found this thing useful in many applications from car repair, television repair, computers, radios, even first aid! I find that I use it every two or three days on something. Perhaps I should get another as a back up if I should lose it, it really does come in quite handy.

This Cybertool stays in my pocket daily, the only thing I would consider replacing it with is the Cybertool 41, but I can't justify the cost or replacement because it still WORKS!

I know that the price might seem a bit high, but you can rest assured, it's worth every penny. When you buy quality, you only have to buy it once.

Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Old Man, February 15, 2012
I have had this tool for about 10 years. I paid $65 for it on sale, and it's just getting more expensive over the years, a good reason to take care of it! I've had to buy a few replacement parts (pen ran out of ink and the toothpick wore out, and one of the screwdriver bits disappeared) which are easy to get at Excalibur in just about any mall. I carry it with me everywhere, sometimes having to hide it in bushes outside music venues (done this more than once!) I use it at least twice a week on computers, cars, digital doodads, furniture, salon equipment, toilets.. and it looks like it. It still impresses the socks off friends. If you're a techie, or a car nut I heartily recommend it. The only thing I would change is I would remove the knives. I'd happily trade one for a little saw and another for a file, and then maybe I wouldn't have to leave it home when I go on plane trips or into music venues. You get used to the weight, especially after a decade. Saying it weighs less than an iPod isn't saying much when those things are made of plastic and not heavy duty metal, which I would hope is what you WANT in a tool, right?

My first CyberTool pocketknife was stolen, so I got this as a replacement. I do not regret it at all. My first one did not have the pliers. They are a nice addition. You can never go wrong with Swiss Army.
