5.0 out of 5 stars Best of the multi-tools, August 2, 2008
This review is from: Victorinox Swiss Army SwissTool Plus (Stainless Steel) (Sports)
I am a multi-tool fanatic - from Gerber to Leatherman, and everything in between. I used to work in a shop specialising in multi-tools and self defence blades and I have seen and tried them all. I've bought six and kept two.
The two I kept was the Leatherman Wave and this one. But why is the Victorinox better than Leatherman's best?

*Better design - hard to describe, but it is a lot easier to use
*Better quality - I'm already on my second Wave. They rust, the pliers and screwdrivers lose their shape and free play develops on the pliers
*Better size - the Leatherman is just too small (I have size 12 hands)
*Better accesories - the Swisstool comes with a nifty socket set which is incredibly user friendly. The Leatherman's has to be purchased seperately, is quite expensive, has to be carried in a seperate pouch and is embarrasingly clumsy
*More practical - bigger everything, better layout, more accessible, better selection of tools
*Safer - I've cut myself on more than one occasion while using the Leatherman's pliers, because it has sharp edges on the outside. One can use the Victorinox with confidence
*The Swisstool has a much bigger and stronger blade than the Leatherman, which is important, because you are probably going to end up using the blade more than anything else
*Sturdier pliers. The pliers on the Victorinox are really strong - I have yet to discover the limits of the Swisstool. The Leaterman is a lot flimsier.
*Better tactile quality - another hard-to-describe factor, but the Swisstool simply feels a lot better in one's hands
*Lifelong guarantee on the Swisstool. You can't beat that. Especially since you'll probably never need it anyway.

BUT: The Swisstool is much bigger and heavier than the Wave. So, if you wear a suit and an office job, the Wave might be better for you after all.

But I'm from Africa, living in the Middle East, and if I'm flying over or driving through the desert, and I may choose only one multi-tool to take with me, it would be the Victorinox, without a doubt.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heavy, and I'm happy, June 19, 2008
This review is from: Victorinox Swiss Army SwissTool Plus (Stainless Steel) (Sports)
What a great multi-tool! I looked at Leatherman, and Gerber, and finally decided to get this one after reading some great reviews on the SwissTool RS. The only difference between this one, the SwissTool RS, and the SwissTool X are a couple of tools are interchanged. THis link goes to the user-manuel, which explains which tools have which tools. http://www.swissarmy.com/CustomerService/Documents/UserManuals/swisstoolmanual.pdf . This is a very heavy product (10 Oz). I really like that about this multi-tool. I am a big guy (6'4"), and I liked that this product felt like you could really work with it and not worry about breaking it. The craftsmanship in this tool is completely evident. You have to hold it to really understand it. The case is also finely crafted. The steel came very very sharp also.

Victorinox took pride in creating this tool. You can tell.

The Rachet is what it is. Sometimes its hard to get the bits out of it, but besides that it works great too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Multitool!, February 5, 2009

I was sick and tired of fumbling through my toolbox whenever I need to do any work around the house, and this multi-tool is a godsend. It has all the basic tools all neatly packed into one compact unit.

Quality-wise, you cannot beat the swisstool. The construction is nothing short of excellent. Each tool folds out and snap into place very nicely. It is very easy to work with.

I put this tool in a convenient place in the house and reach for it whenever I need any tools. The tools I use most are the blade and the screwdrivers. The plyer is also very well made and handy. I cannot really find any faults with it.

My only complain about this tool is the lack of a pair of scissors. However, this is not a fault of the tool. It is my fault for not making sure that I buy the correct version. Apparently, the Swisstool X and the Swisstool CS have a pair of scissors attached. To get around that, I fit a small Victorinox Swiss Army Pocket Knife in the pouch and pull it out when I need a pair of scissors.

Fantastic tool, very sturdy and durable, well built, fine craftsmanship. Only two cons: no scissors tool, and its quite heavy. The weight factors in when you take this tool on bikes or hiking trips.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE BEST!, December 22, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

Well, I have always been a gadgeteer, and I owned several multi-tools as I grew up. Leathermans, mostly. About 15 years ago, I bought the Victorinox on my brother-in-law's recommendation. (The Leatherman tools are now gathering much dust.)
The tool has served me well for all those years, and, although it still works fine, I decided to get this one with the little accessory set. My original one I have used almost every day. Have never had to sharpen the blades, etc. Just routine oiling very infrequently.
When I'm out somewhere with friends, and they need a tool, they know who to turn to. This probably rings a bell with some of you: "Hey, McGyver!"
Anyway, as the title says, this is THE BEST. If you are ever in need of a tool of this type, this is the one. And if the situation is a tricky one, an emergency, or of immediate danger, you will be thankful that you bought the best. In my opinion, the others do not come close. Period.

I bought my first one some time ago and I cannot even start to describe how useful this tool has been. I keep one with me and I am putting one in my car and another in my wife's car. Do you get the picture of how useful this things are?
